What do people think of the Glasgow bid for the Commonwealth games?

I'm in favour of developing sports facilities, but I think it would be better to spend £250m on community sports centres than on world-class facilities for elite athletes. It sounds more like an ego-boosting project for the Labour politicians in charge of our taxes - echoes of the parliament building...

I think now London has the Olympics Glasgow has got zero chance of getting the Commonwealth games, they're not going to let both happen in the UK within 2 year of one another. Another factor is that the area planned for the most of the facilities is Parkhead / Dalmarnock. Its pretty hideous, and it would bring a lot to the area, but I think it would be a miracle if they managed to integrate such a huge development into such a difficult area. One of the sites to be used is the land directly opposite Celtic park, which used to be the housing scheme which was home to the Parkhead rebels gang. Just to paint a picture....

Calls for Muslim radicals to leave

I am glad that the CofS moderator is not mincing his words, what I do find rather stunning though is that it has divided opinion in the CofS itself while most muslims would agree with him! (if the President of the Islamic Centre in Glasgow is to be believed)

I think those in the CofS are more likely to be shocked that the moderator has said anything at all! It is more of a handshaking baby kissing honorary post than anything else and the press office in 121 George St are probably wetting themselves and cursing him at the moment. As a paid up member I am delighted to see a Moderator earning his frilly cuffs! I may not agree with all he said, but if there was total agreement then it wouldn't be the C of S! ;)

Not sure how helpful his comments are likely to be.... Might have been better as a joint pronouncement with some Islamic Groups - less likely to be twisted into another statement to join the ranks of Tebbit and Kilroy Silk in the foaming at the mouth brigade.

What do people think of the proposal to abolish prescription charges?

Personally, I think that people have a responsibility to contribute directly to the cost of their treatment. The £6.50 prescription charge is very cheap in relation to the cost of modern drugs, but it serves to remind people that healthcare is not a free resource.
When my daughter needed treatment for an ear infection in Florida 8 years ago, it cost us over £80 in doctor's fees and pharmacy charges. An appointment with a BUPA physician can easily leave little change from £90.
The NHS is already a great deal - those of us who can afford it should not grudge paying a few pounds toward the cost of the service we receive.

I know there are some people with health problems and low incomes who struggle to meet these costs and it is right that they should be helped, but most people can afford to pay towards the cost of their medicines.
