I am curious where you found that topic. I ask that because what you quote seems to ask 'how does price change with changes in cross section'. The base material cost will be the same regardless.

Probably talking about cutting holes in the beams thenselves to reduce weight. Very common in shipbuilding. Might try checking some ship design sites.

This would be my first suggestion. It might be only BARELY marginally useful in your paper (yes, that was repetatively redundant) but it'll suck up all that time you SHOULD be working on your paper, and nobody can claim that it's not related to the subject!

Are you looking for info regarding the loss of strength compared to the cost savings of using a hollow beam vs a solid beam?

the best beam is the "I" beam. You might want to talk about trusses too since they can go into more detail about the geometric bit.
i've got an engineering report on "beams and trusses" if you need it for some ideas but its a bit specific on balsa bridges.
