In one word? That's hard... Investagative?
Science is the search for knowledge through empirical evidence and the conclusions drawn from large amounts of evidence.
I'd imagine my paragraph would be like my sentance, just more drawn out
Overall? helpful
Overall? Helpful.
However, in certain cases, harmful (hiroshima/nagasaki, for example. At the same time though, the case could be made that the war would have continued on without those bombs.)
Overall, I'd say science has been helpful.

Knowledge

How would you define science in one sentence?

The aquistion of experiential knowledge in an inquiry that demonstrates truth.

how would you define science in one pragraph? (100 words max)

Science describes, developes and applies demonstrative and directly observed processes and applies the knowledge gained to problem solving projects. Science is the working knowledge that is organized according to the stepwise logic of practical application. Science is altogether practical and is a collection of disciplines that specify explicit points of contact between human reason and the far unlit unknown.

Overall, today, is science helpful or destructive to mankind?

It is both because it is neutral. Science is a mirror that reflects reality, its up to you what you do with that reflection that it creates.

Overall, in the past, was science helpful or destructive to mankind?

Vinnie

Science has been generating tools and complex systems that have been altogether unaccountable to moral and cultural authority. Science for all of its wonderfull accomplishments has created systems and tools that have no soul. It has been of great benefit and brought great harm but the beauty of science is that it is neither, it is based on what is experientally true or false. That is it's glory and it's shame.

A human activity devoted to understanding aspects of the universe and applying some of that understanding to solving problems.

It is an activity which relies on:-

1) certain agreed assumptions which form a framework – assumptions such as the nature of reality; that aspects of the universe can be understood by the human mind; that things can only be explained by appealing to that which is known, not by appealing to that which is unknown; etc.

2) the discovery of laws and principles by which aspects of the universe supposedly operate or behave. These laws and principles are discovered via the process in 3).

3) a process whereby observations are undertaken to collect data. This data is interpreted in the light of the above mentioned framework to either develop theories or to test theories thereby modifying, confirming or rejecting them. Methods of interpretation can either be deductive or inductive.

4) Theories. These are both used as explanatory systems in their own right and they guide/determine the next generation of experiments which are used to determine their own viability.

As a vehicle for knowledge, it can only be helpful. As a vehicle for applying that knowledge it is both destructive and helpful.

See above.

Hi Ed,

Though as a Christian I do like your definition of science, I don't think your comment about hijacking is accurate. Science is a lot of different things to different people. Yes, we may have different motives for wishing to pursue an interest (or even, a career) in science, and some people's motives have no place for "god. But science itself is not an atheistic (or theistic) plot, and indeed one of its greatest strengths is that by definition, it never can be :).

Peace,
Nick

Investigation

How would you define science in one sentence?
A tool to investigate the world around us and produce a working model to describe this world.

How would you define science in one pragraph? (100 words max)
Science is above all a methodology to make systematically accumulate knowledge that is objective to all. For this, we must draw up models based on evidence that can be tested when new evidence comes along. We must be able to draw hypothesis out of these models that we can test, either by repeating earlier tests or predicting new finds.

Science is a continuing search for knowledge and in that can never be said to be absolutely right. Inherent in the scientific method is that we can be wrong and have to correct our models if they are wrong.

Overall, today, is science helpful or destructive to mankind?
I think it is overall helpful. We use scientific discoveries to do some pretty gruesome things, but overall I think the good things done with scientific discoveries by man outweigh the bad ones.

Overall, in the past, was science helpful or destructive to mankind?
Same as above.
