The problem that JL has is that he leaves God out of the equation. That is a recipe for disaster -not unity. Don't you believe that God who created all things has the right to redeem His creation back to Himself?

The problem is all those believers in God. Those believers are often intolerant and devise means to divide and not unify. So "leaving God out of the equation" is not necessarily bad if it leaves out all those believers who think they can force belief of God and "unity" in that belief on everyone.

My daughter has a bumper sticker that reads "God, please save me from Your believers."

John Prine has a song where part of the refrain is "They all found Jesus on their own." Perhaps that is what Lennon wants: let people find God on their own and thus, "leave God out of the equation". God can then do whatever redeeming He wants. After all, He is going to do that no matter what us mere humans do or want, isn't He?

you are not. But I love you anyway, just as you are.

There's a difference between drawing a line in the sand, or seeking one out, and standing to one side of it ... verses finding yourself surrounded by lines that others are busy drawing and asking you, "what's your stance ?".
