  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Yea for grandparents!

I heard my cousin obtained a scholarship for high school. I didn't know such things existed, because high school has always been free unless its private. And it wasn't a private high school.

My other cousin had this hunch that because she was bright they wanted to attract more academic achieving students to their school, which has had a bad reputation in the past.
I know that kind of thing goes on because in my high school, they paid for students to be there that were really good at sports. I don't know what they paid, maybe the sports fees costs. They could be really useless at studying, but excellent at sport, as long as they won for the high school it didn't matter. Plus even if they were too old for their year.

I started my final semester of undergraduate last month. :) I don't know about the fall yet.

The majority is paid for through my merit-based scholarships. I usually take out a loan or two each year based on how much of the remainder my family can afford to pay.

So you will be graduating very soon, yes? Congratulations.

well so much for VBS who is actually going back to school this year, whether it be college, evening classes, or study by distance/correspondence?

What papers/courses/workshops do you plan on studying this year?
Will you need to take out a loan or do you have a scholarship, or is it free?

I am in the second week of the spring quarter of my first year at college, and loving it. :) I'm planning on pursuing a major in Political Science with a primary track in Justice and Law and a second track in International Relations, and a minor in Philosophy. I'm hoping to get into a coterm program in International Policy Studies which would allow me to work towards my master's degree while completing my undergrad studies. That's farther down the road, though. After I graduate I would like to work for a couple of years and then go to law school.

This quarter I'm taking -
. The Science of Politics
. Biosecurity and Bioterrorism Response
. How to think about the Charlie Hebdo Attacks: Political, Social, and Cultural Contexts
. Human Behavioral Biology
. Dance, Movement and Medicine: Immersion in Dance for Parkinson Disease (1 unit)
. Introducing Ockham & His Razor: Mind & Metaphysics, Logic, Epistemology & Ethics (weekend seminar)
. Individual Work, Drawing and Painting

Sorry for the somewhat odd format, ha. I just copied and pasted it. I wrote a preposterously long post about the course requirements at my college last week when I was procrastinating going to sleep. I doubt anyone's interested, but here is the link to it just in case: http://www.christianforums.com/threads/your-schooling.7916757/#post-69448325

My college does offer free tuition, but only to students who meet specific income eligibility requirements. I received merit scholarships from outside of the college. My parents very generously pay the majority of my expenses. I'm incredibly grateful.

Yep, in May. And I recently accepted a job offer.

:cheer:Congratulations!!!!!! You must be so elated!

Pink sweetheart.
You can discuss school and expenses here.

My theory why school costs so much. The teachers want to be paid. But it doesnt seem fair that the students who of course, have no paid jobs yet, because they are busy studying, are the ones that end up paying.

Well, my school is actually using a good chunk of our tuition money to fund our stinky football team that is losing money. Plus, our incoming freshmans have a high drop out rate and... Well, my school needs to get it's priorities striaght.

I have to pay for school with loans and it pretty much sucks haha.

I remember that one time we almost beat you guys, but you got a lucky tackle on like the four yard line.

Yeah, sometimes we just get lucky. We get really close a few times and then we just lose momentum haha.

I heard lots of parents setting up homeschools and daycares in their own homes now.

Im just thinking, well, how much would it cost to put an adventure playground in my backyard, a blackboard, and those hooks to hang up school bags. I could even have uniforms, I will make them out of pyjamas.

For lunch time we could even have a COOKED, HOT lunch. Oh also I will need a bell.

Must be why I bought that bell. God wants me to have a school in my own home.

Oh am applying for student allowance, pray that I will receive it!

Worried that you won't know when class starts or when it is over without the bell? Are you going to make yourself a bathroom pass too?

The bathroom pass should be made out of a board, so it can double as a paddle. That's what we had in my elementary school.

I received my preliminary exam for my PhD yesterday afternoon and have two weeks to work on it before I have to turn it in. Then I have a week for the members of my committee to review it before I have to have a presentation and oral defense of it. I'm under some stress.

I was reading in my convocation book for my alma mater that in the olden days, before someone graduated, they had to present an entire lecture (even at Bachelors level). But nowadays nobody does that, not that I know of.

although at teaching certificate level we had to teach and do 8 hours of classes. But that's different from a whole lecture. I don't know..for a BA bachelor of Arts, or even Masters all I had to do was pass exams and hand in assignments. We did do some presentations, which were taped, I suppose it was stressful at the time.

I just want to encourage you to perservere, because the teachers really don't want to fail you. Its in their best interests that you pass. So if you need support ask for it, there's people there to help, plus lots of schools have chaplains and you can ask them for prayer.

hooray student allowance was approved, for one of my courses.
Well, something is better than nothing!

Looks like instant noodles for me. I was just reading in the paper about a 24 year old who now owns three homes, she started working at age 13 (I wasn't even allowed) and lived on rice and tuna. I mean she starved so she could save for a house. But that was in the days when she only needed a small deposit to buy one. And they actually had houses in those days available.

I bet she's still paying it off though, and plus now has three rates bills owing to the council, which are only going to increase, so the fact that she has owns three homes isn't really saying much. But at least she has a roof over her head, as long as it isn't leaky like many homes that were built in the 90s.

And she probably still lives on rice and tuna.

Sorry being snarky. Maybe im envious. Naw.
Everyone is in the same boat. Times are tough if you want to 'get ahead' but maybe you dont need to. Maybe its just enough to relax and stay afloat with Jesus. I mean look what happened to the Titanic.

Something I learned, you know how in harry potter there was this school of witchcraft and wizardry? Well actually many teachers are practising witches and wizards. If you paying a school a lot of money to learn something, you are going to be trained in their world view right? And if you dont cut it for them, they not going to recruit you into the job they training you up to do, I just realised that. One of my teachers, I just had that vibe about him that he was a wizard and many of the students in my class thought so too. At first I couldnt put my finger on it, but it was there..and i had encountered it before in one of my teachers in high school.

Sometimes i dont like to think about that, assuming naively that all teachers are good and christian, but of course many wont be. Some can be absolute tyrants.
