  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Monday night was the first one. It opened with prayer, taught us beginning karate moves, and closed in prayer. But at the end of the evening he said that next week there would be a Bible study included--in English. I think that perhaps he'll draw a parallel between the focus and discipline involved in karate and walking the Christian walk, but I don't know for sure. I'll keep you posted!
Hmm never heard of it...
My ladies bible study doesnt include any karate moves, we pretty much sit round on sofas and then have a cup of tea and maybe biscuits and cakes.

I'll be honest, I did cringe on the suggestion of moving. I have once moved before for, what I thought was an accredited school, only to find out that it wasn't over half way through the course.
The purpose is for myself, really. Not that I don't already have the discipline to read the Bible, I'm just thinking it could help me study further.

I see.

Well, most institutions that would purport to offer something like a certificate that trains you to read the bible better are kind of... pointless. There are resources out there that can give you better exegetical skills, perhaps even a working knowledge of Greek and Hebrew without shelling out the money to get a certificate.

Do you enjoy reading? I'm assuming you do because you're talking about taking college courses. I'm sure a few of us could recommend a few titles from biblical scholars and theologians that would broaden and deepen your approach to scripture.

Yes, this! I love to learn and would love to take a deeper look into the Bible :)
I've taken a few college courses just to learn something new.

Those studies have value too (well, the biscuits and cake don't but I could give you recipes for some healthful ones that do have value, if you like!), but I gotta say, this is the coolest study I've attended yet!

Recipes would be good!
If you have healthy ones all the better..im not really a sweet tooth. In nz theres a baking culture, you cant get away from biscuits, cakes, and slices. Every workplace has the tyranny of 'ladies a plate' and every farmers wife MUST know how to bake otherwise shes not worth her salt.

If you buy your biscuits from the shop, its considered cheating.

I highly recommend reading anything from NT Wright. He used to be a bishop in the Church of England but now he's a professor of New Testament Studies at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. He's widely considered one of the leading New Testament scholars in our time.

Here's a list of his selected works.

I would go the biblical archaeology route if I was to take a deeper look at the bible, and make a study trip to israel. But then that costs money..but theres videos you can watch hosted by scholars whove been there, if I remember rightly there was one that was part of a series called 'so that the world may know' i dont know if its on you tube.

Learning greek or hebrew so I could better appreciate scripture would be good but The problem is i am not in a greek or hebrew speaking culture so any language I learn wouldnt be used...if i was jewish I'd actually be learning to read and speak it and using it everyday.

That's a pretty interesting subject, indeed. My friend is researching for his PhD in Archaeology at University of Kent and does a lot of his field work in Ostia.

huh am on waitlist.
But..I found a free landscape design course I can do by distance learning.
So am going to enrol in that. I hope they take me without any hassles.

Last year I went back to primary school to learn the bible. But this year I think I will do something different. (they said they needed helpers, but I was really secretly learning the Bible along with the children).

hmm I still need to pay admin costs. but $300 odd dollars for a course is much cheaper than $3000. This time it's distant learning.

Although free is cheaper than $300 but I still had to pay petrol to get to and from primary school I suppose.

Education can be expensive, sigh.

Theres a bible college up the road, but you have to pay. They dont teach people the bible for free, which is what I thought they would do. Maybe they think church is where ordinary people should learn, and bible college for the richer people. I dunno.

I doubt there's any conscious agenda there. The fact of the matter is you can't run a college for free. The funding has to come from somewhere.

Nothing is free. If people stopped tithing and giving money to the church, we wouldn't have church buildings, full-time pastors, or most material things necessary for church in the 21st century.

Do you think the teachers at a Bible College should work for free? Along with the librarians, the secretaries, the custodians,...? Do the utility companies give them electricity and water for free? How does a "free" education work in your mind?

A formal education cost money. To "be educated" costs no more than a library card and online access. All you have to do is read books.

I am thinking of joining another bible study within my church that meets on another day, so I'm not just going to the ladies one. But is not held on the day straight after.

This one, I don't think has karate moves in it, but the host likes to do woodwork. So maybe he could teach me how to chop wood or something.

I need to get some things signed by a jp for my application etc. but at least I know they are processing it.
it must be a bummer to apply for a course you really want to do but not get in and then not have any other options. Ive not had that happen to me but then I didnt apply for anything like med school.

The worst thing though is to graduate and then not able to find a job in that field but that has become so common these days that education for a sustainiable career is often farcical.
