• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

I have a question concerning schizophrenia. I have a friend whose father suffers from a persecution complex. But he is a Christian (well, he calls himself a Christian, and he raises his kids very strictly and, in my opinion, a tad too religiously), and there's the point which has always made me think: what is schizophrenia REALLY, how do you get it, and why do Christians get that, too? The last question probably seems a bit strange since being a Christian isn't being safe from all sicknesses and disease, of course.
I have heard quite much about schizophrenia and its symptoms, but I barely know anything about the causes of this illness.
Let's take John Nash, for instance. He was a brilliant man and mathematician, some real bright guy, but he suffered from schizophrenia. He saw people and things that didn't exist in reality, but only in his head. My friend's father sees people hunting him, or he feels uncomfortable because he thinks everyone watches him, but it is only in his head. My question is, WHAT is it that causes such malfunctions in people's heads? What is it that makes people make up things, images, fantasies in their brains against their will? I really have a hard time accepting schizophrenia as a brain illness (most of all maybe because I don't know much about it.) Neither do I think that multiple personality disorder is a physical dysfunction in the brain.
I dreaded asking this question since I don't want to offend anyone who suffers from schizophrenia or MPD, but can it be that a person who is schizophrenic or has an MPD is not physically sick, but demons take over the functions of the person's brain from time to time to deceive him and encroach upon him? I read some diagnostic findings, but they never speak of the possibilty of "spiritual" influences.
I'd be glad to hear someone's explanation as to what causes schizophrenia, and correction of my assumptions if they're wrong.

Schizophrenia is different from Multiple Personality Disorder. Schizophrenia is a brain chemistry problem which causes the patient to suffer from hallucinations and psychosis. These breaks from reality occur in different forms. Some see things. Others hear things. Multiple Personality Disorder is when a person takes on different personalities.

Schizophrenics can have a decent life with the proper medication and psychotherapy. Problem is, many patients start to feel better, and stop taking their medications and the symptoms return.

What you describe in your friend's father is paranoid schizophrenia.

As for the problem being demonic, that was the consensus back in history, and people were tortured to get the demons out of them.

If you want to learn more about schizophrenia and mental illnessess there is a lot of information at the National Association of Mental Illness. http://www.nami.org/
They offer educational support groups for family members of the mentally ill throughout the country.

Hope this helps.

I am sorry that nobody will believe you. I believe you. I am doing an internship at a mental health facility with people who are suffering from all sorts of mental illnesses, including schizphrenia. I understand your pain and confusion.

Are you in therapy? Is the doctor who prescribes your medication a psychiatrist? Why do you stop taking your medication? I take medication and do not stop taking it without a doctor's input.

I hope you are able to get the help you need.

That is a common problem. It is so important to communicate with the psychiatrist who is prescribing them about how you are feeling in the medication. He/she can make adjustments and make sure you are feeling better while on the medication. Next time you are feeling like it is not working make the call to the doctor. It will help you so much.
