Is this one of those "belief in this is not necessary for salvation" things?

Right. A scapular is a sacramental. Sacramentals are sacred signs that "extend and radiate the sacraments".
Here's an earlier response of mine to the question of Holy Water:

Uberm a SCAPULAR is a garment.

The brown scapular is the garment of the Carmelite order. To be able to wear that garment, one had to take the vows of the order and maintain those vows. To die wearing the brown scapular means that you died being a part of the Carmelite order, community, faithful to your vows.

It is not about wearing a simple bit of cloth. It is about all that that bit of cloth stands for and means, and what it means about you. When Mary gave those promises, it had to do with a floor length garment that was worn over the sholders like an apron . . front and back. You wore it all the time. It identified you as a Carmelite devoted to Jesus.

Today, we can wear a much smaller version, tht are two little squares of cloth front and back . . by wearing them we identify with the Carmelite order, become connected with it. But if we die unfaithful, we can expect no rights to the promises Mary gave the Carmelites who wear the full length scapular to this day.

It is not a blanket promise Uber . . . you can't just put on a scapular and expect to go directly to heaven.

Peace
