Saw the movie for about the 12th time on ABC last night...and as many times as I've seen it, I just love the way it ends. With James Francis Ryan as an older man at the grave of Captain Miller who led the group that found and saved him wondering if he had truly "earned" the honor of having others die to save him.

Can't help but reflect on my life to wonder if I'm earning the honor of having had millions of people die for my freedom. More importantly it also causes me to reflect on whether I'm truly living the life God wants me to live...after all, he sacrificed his one and only son for me (and all of you btw)...the very least I can do is try and make him proud.

If they were going to go through the risk of playing it, why not in WIDESCREEN?!?!?

One ABC affiliate in my area ran it, the other didn't. They ran a Matlock rerun and a thanksgiving special w/Naomi Judd - Talk about adding insult to injury!
Nothing honors veterans day more than Andy Griffith and a washed up country singer...way to go affiliates!

They're protesting/afraid of the FCC, depending how you look at it.

Spielberg's deal with ABC is that they can only show SPR completely uncut. After Janet Jackson's nipple, WWII is too indecent for the kiddies.

TV ban excuse - You can thank all the good Christians who were offended by a quarter second view of a female breast on TV.
Your welcome....the big difference is that at least with Saving Private Ryan I know that it isnt a movie for kids....Super Bowl Halftime show was supposed to be....do you get the difference?

Legally, there is no difference. Both were shown on Prime Time television; when it is expected that children would be watching.

A clear Double Standard.

There is a huge difference. Football isn't supposed to be full of foul language... massive amounts of bloodshed.. etc.. besides.. you received a warning that SPR would be on. Where you can make the decision to watch that movie.. or not. While watching football, you are suddenly exposed to nudity when you expected none can make people mad.

So yes, there is a clear distinction.

So could we show hard-core porno on Prime-Time Television just so long as we announce it ahead of time, and every adult, who, as we all know, watches television with their kiddies, can make an informed decision?

I mean, since there's no problem with Saving Private Ryan, because everybody knows what it's all about, then wouldn't the same argument apply to Saving Ryan's Privates? ;)

I watched the super Bowl halftime show. And let me tell you, it happened so fast, and they were so far away that I wasn't even sure if I actually saw her breast. There were 6 other people (and 3 kids) in the room with me. And when I made that suprised face and went "was that her..." No one else knew what I was talking about. None of them, NONE of them, even caught it. So we went on with our night thinking I had just been mistaken... until the next morning.

Saving Private Ryan is a great movie. I think that everyone over the age of 14 should watch it, and remember that there are reasons that you shouldn't go to war lightly. (i.e. those death scenes and battle scenes aren't exagerated. If anything, they are extremely downplayed. I have real pictures. War is a horrible, horrible thing.)

I watched the half-time show and somehow missed it as well.

If the media hadn't gone on and on and on about it they probably could have prevented a lot of the concern they now face.

But the Saving Private Ryan showing does raise an issue about broadcasting more recent movies that are starting to become much more graphic than previous movies were (take a look at The Passion of The Christ and the Kill Bill movies over the past year).

This might just be an isolated case if the deal between Spielberg and ABC was that they could only show an uncut version. I imagine the deal was signed before the Superbowl incident and in the future they can negotiate a deal with that in mind (or find another movie). If the network signed the deal after the Superbowl then I think there needs to be better communication between affiliates and the network about what each is willing to broadcast.

Of course, in Canada there are a couple of regular cable stations that are broadcasting porn in primetime and language only gets bleeped if the feed is from the US. I don't notice much violence in Canadian programming unless the CBC is running a documentary on Iraq...in that case they don't leave much to the imagination.
