To make my favorite sandwich:
  • Pam
  • 1 clove garlic, crushed
  • 3 mushrooms sliced thinly
  • 2 thin slices turkey ham, chopped up
  • 2 Tbs sliced almonds
  • Salt
  • A sandwich roll, sliced open and toasted
  • Mayonnaise
  • (Grey Poupon or favorite mustard)
  • 2 thin turkey breast slices
  • 2 thin beef slices
  • Slice of Swiss cheese
  • Sliced tomato
  • 2 raw mustard greens leaves
  • Sprouts
  • Celantro leaves
  1. Spray the pan with Pam.
  2. Drop the almonds in the pan, salting them lightly. Toast them until they are golden-brown and remove them from the pan immediately.
  3. Drop the garlic, mushroom slices, and turkey ham in the pan and sautee them until the musrooms are toasty. (You may need to add a little olive oil.)
  4. Spread the rolls with mayo and mustard (if desired)
  5. On the roll, place meat meat, cheese, tomato, and greens.
  6. Top these with the sauteed mushrooms, turkey ham, and almonds
M-m-m-m!!

Did anyone say what bologna is? It is ground up meat parts, ground so finely that the meat is very smooth. It is pinkish. It is then rolled and scrushed into round loaves, bound with red plastic, and usually sold in thin slices. When you are ready to use it, you remove the plastic from the edges. It is pretty bad-tasting, but people who get used to it often like it quite well.

In the northern U.S., adults usually eat it between two slices of bread with mustard, mayonnaise or a sweet sandwich spread, lettuce, and tomato. Children like it on white bread with just a light spread; some like it with mustard.

In the south, the plastic is removed, little cuts are made around the edges, and it is sauteed in a pan. They usually then serve it as above or on toasted bread.

Edit:
I forgot the onions! you can't to this without sliced red onions! That would be desecration!

Susanna,

I lived in England for about 3 years while growing up. (A small village called Prestbury, near Macclesfield, near Manchester.) Man, it was cold! The sun hardly shone!

The butcher shop in town cried when we moved because my mom was his best customer! We Americans sure like our meat! Even the produce market thought we were weird...mom went to buy some cucumbers and they asked if she wanted a quarter or a half of one!;) She said "I'll take three!" They about fell over! We tried to buy fresh corn-on-the-cob and my mom got a lecture about only the cows and goats ate corn on the husk! We sure taught some of our neighbors a thing or two!:sorry:

The closest we got to real bologna in England was mortadella. They served it at our school, but instead of thin cut in a sandwich, it was cut thick, about 3/4", and fried. Ughhhh.

My favorite sandwich in England was from a bakery in the village. The used a really soft fresh-baked roll, butter, and chunks of roasted chicken. Mmmmmh good! I still make those today, whenever I have left-over chicken!:)

I'm surprised no one has brought up a fluffernutter. It's peanutbutter and marshmallow fluff.

WHAT??? As I've said, I dislike peanut butter, but even if I didn't, I can't think why I'd want to mix it with sweet things like marshmallows or jam. That's a bit like spreading marmite on a jaffa cake, or honey on a sausage.

Sandwich Question: there is some kind of sandwich that is dipped in egg and fried (or something). Does anyone know what it is?

I am with three of my youngest grandchildren today, and they all chose toasted cheese. When I make this for my husband, I do these open-faced sandwiches:
  • thick slices of Italian bread
  • butter
  • fresh tuna or a can of tuna
  • 2 Tbs mayonnaise
  • 2 Tbs chopped celery
  • 2 Tbs chopped onions (any kind)
  • 2 Tbs toasted slivered almonds
1. Toast the bread then butter it lightly.
2. Mix all the rest of the ingredients together, then spread on single slices of toast

  • slices of Swiss cheese
  • slices of cheddar cheese
3. Top each open-faced sandwich with a slice of each cheese and place in the toaster oven until the cheese is nice and melty

  • sprouts
Remove from the oven and top with sprouts.

I truly didn't realize the brits had such different sandwiches! I'll have to serve Susana some different things and see how she fares! Should be interesting! LOL! I love fried bologna sandwiches.....but I will admit to something else that has been LEFT OUT of the discussion....I love fried spam sandwiches....There! I admitted it! :D

Velcro, are you thinking about a Monte Cristo sandwich? It has good fillings like ham and cheese and such and is dipped in egg and fried up and served with raspberry jam and powdered sugar!

Well, that is real likely. It sounded good until I read "ham," "jam and powdered sugar." :D Maybe I could adapt it?

Hey -- I eat my French toast with salt and pepper, not syrup or powdered sugar!
