I'm invited to preach on the work of the Holy Spirit in us during a retreat by the end of this month. Since the retreat is targeted at youth, I thought of mentioning how some saints overcame their struggles with lust through the help of the Holy Spirit.

However, I only remember St. Augustine, as he's probably the most known example of this. Do you recall any other saints who struggled with lust and that finally overcame it?

I'm wondering why people think young people's only struggle is with their hormones ?

There's a billion things kids struggle with and all anyone whats to talk about is sex.

I would agree with this. The struggle against lust is really part of an overall culture-driven ethic of "do what your body wants you to do."

Sexual lust is only a facet of that overall cultural ethic--just one hill on the battlefield.

The more important thing, IMO, is to recognize broadly the anti-Christian nature of the culture and develop strategies for overcoming the full attack. When you're in the middle of enemy territory, you can't focus on just one hill.

I'm not stating this. However, I know who I'm going to be speaking to, and they themselves expressed me in other times that they wanted to know especifically about it. It's not the only thing I'll be talking about. Don't dereail the thread.

Saints Are People Too

As regards to the saints who struggled against blasphemous thoughts, St. Therese of Lisieux describes such struggles in her autobiography. St. Anthony Mary Claret had such struggles too. St. Ignatius of Loyola describes how in times of spiritual desolation thoughts against Jesus or the other Persons of the Blessed Trinity assailed him. Detailed descriptions of these kinds of interior struggles are offered by the desert fathers, like St. Moses the Black and St. Anthony of the Desert.

St. Mary of Egypt

St. Agnes of Rome
.......

Saint Mary Magdelene "The Penitent" she was just caught in the act of Adultrey. She turned from her ways, and lived a very faithful life for the rest of her life. She could help. in this area

Saint. Bertilia: Foundress and noble virgin. She and her bridegroom took vows of chastity and remained virgins. When her husband died, Bertilia lived as a hermitess near the church that she had founded at Maroeuil, France.

Saint. Helenus of the Desert: I followed the way of chastity and moderation, honed by the practice of fasting and prayer, to quell the temptations of the flesh.
God provided what I needed when I needed. I visited other monks. My load was heavy, and in the name of Jesus, I enlisted wild donkeys to carry my burden.
On another occasion, I visited a monastery for Sunday service. But there was to be none, because of river crocodiles. To conduct services, I told a crocodile in Jesus name to give me a ride on its back to see the Presbyter. It did so. But the Presbyter was too frightened to come. God gave me the ability to read souls and spirits, as well as to stop evil spirits from tormenting.

Saint. Ammon: Monastic founder, sometimes called Amon, Amun, or Amus. An Egyptian living in or near Alexandria, he was forced into a marriage at the age of twenty-two. He asked his wife to take a vow of chastity on their wedding night and they lived as brother and sister for eighteen years. His wife then formed a congregation of women religious, and Ammon went to the desert area south of Alexandria. There Ammon founded or aided in the development of a great religious community called "The City of God" by St. Jerome. By the end of the fourth century there were five thousand hermits in the community. St. Anthony came to visit Ammon, whose holiness attracted countless solitaries. When Ammon died at the age of sixty-two, St. Anthony, who was some thirteen miles distant, saw his soul ascend to heaven.

Hope some of these helped.

2) Saint Mary Magdelene
3) Saint Helenus of the Desert

St. Mary Magdalene de Pazzi, a Carmelite Nun of the Ancient Observance whom God allowed to endure great temptations against purity from the devil

St. Francis of Assisi... patron saint of the cold shower... well, they didn't really have showers back in his day, but he would roll in the snow to calm his passions.

"Alessandro Serenelli–Posted Image the young man who murdered the 12-year old Maria Goretti in a fit of lust-filled rage.
I was touched by the story of his conversion. His life’s example echoes that of so many men, husbands and fathers of today who find themselves lost and overwhelmed in the depths of impurity, immorality and depravity. Yet each is capable of experiencing the same loving, merciful grace of God as did Alessandro. Our Lord is just waiting to reach down into the depths of their souls and lead them out of this foretaste of Hell in which they find themselves and into the light of conversion – if only there were organized and knowledgeable help available to them.

Alessandro Serenelli experienced, in body and in soul, the fullness of conversion – from the depths of Hell to the Kingdom of Heaven. As such, I am convinced that Alessandro Serenelli was destined by God to be this role model of conversion from depravity to salvation – a man whose life’s example can serve as a light for so many suffering people today."

It's not really a derailment. As said before, teens struggle through their period of "hormone poisoning," but that affects a huge host of issues beyond mere sexual desire.

That same hormone surge causes boys and girls to make all kinds of dumb decisions. From my memory and what I've seen in my son and daughter, boys tend to make most of their dumb decisions in an attempt to gain or maintain respect and respectability. Girls tend to make most of their dumb decisions in an attempt to gain or maintain love and lovability.

Funny how scripture points that out precisely: "Wives respect your husbands; husbands love your wives.

The adolescent hormone rush puts a keen edge of necessity and urgency on what are basic human desires...across the board.

The real reason a teen boy makes the dumb decision to text while driving is down at its base a need to gain or retain respectability; the real reason a teen girl makes exactly the same dumb decision is to gain or maintain lovability.

It's all connected, and the strategy to combat dumb decisions is also connected.
