St. Katharine Drexel

Saint Katharine Drexel, Religious (Feast Day-March 3) Born in 1858, into a prominent Philadelphia family, Katharine became imbued with love for God and neighbor. She took an avid interest in the material and spiritual well-being of black and native Americans. She began by donating money but soon concluded that more was needed - the lacking ingredient was people. Katharine founded the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament for Indians and Colored People, whose members would work for the betterment of those they were called to serve. From the age of 33 until her death in 1955, she dedicated her life and a fortune of 20 million dollars to this work. In 1894, Mother Drexel took part in opening the first mission school for Indians, in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Other schools quickly followed - for Native Americans west of the Mississippi River, and for the blacks in the southern part of the United States. In 1915 she also founded Xavier University in New Orleans. At her death there were more than 500 Sisters teaching in 63 schools throughout the country. Katharine was beatified by Pope John Paul II on November 20, 1988

St. Lydwine

Patron of sickness


St. Lydwine is the patroness of sickness. Lydwine of Shiedam was born in Shiedam, Holland, one of nine children of a working man. After an injury in her youth, she became bedridden and suffered the rest of her life from various illnesses and diseases. She experienced mystical gifts, including supernatural visions of heaven, hell, purgatory, apparitions of Christ and the stigmata. Thomas a Kempis wrote a biography of her. She was canoized by Pope Leo XIII in 1896.

St. Mamas
Feastday:August 17

Martyred shepherd at Caesarea, in Cappadocia. The Roman Martyrology identifies him as the son of Sts. Theodotus and Rufina who died at an advanced age. An Eastern tradition states that he was a young boy stoned to death. Sts. Basil and Gregory Nazianzus wrote of him.

St. Nino

Feast Day: 15 December

Virgin and the Apostle of Georgia

Slave. Not originally from Georgia, she may have been brought there by her master when he emigrated, she may have been the spoils of war, or she may have fled her own war-racked homeland and become enslaved after her move to more peaceful Georgia.

She cured a dying child by placing her hair shirt on him, and praying over him. News of this miracle reached the Queen of Georgia, who was suffering an unspecified but untreatable malady. She sent for Nino who replied, "I am a slave. My place is not in a palace." The Queen went to Nino, who cured her by prayer.

The royal family offered her any reward; she asked that they convert. The recently healed queen was willing, but King Mirian was not. However, soon after, while on a hunt, he found himself surrounded by wild animals. He made one of those well-known deals with God, offering to convert if he survived. The animals left, and in 325 the king asked Constantine for priests and bishops to spread the faith throughout Georgia.

This good work begun, Nino retired to live as a prayerful recluse on a mountainside at Bodbe, Kakheti.

St. Onesimus


Martyr and former slave. He is mentioned in St. Paul’s Letter to Philemon as the slave of Philemon in Colossae, Phrygia, who ran away. Paul met Onesimus while the former was in a Roman prison, and Paul baptized the slave and came to consider him his own son. Paul sent Onesimus back to Philemon with the epistle, asking Philemon to accept him “no longer as a slave, but more than a slave, a brother, beloved especially to me, but even more so to you, as a man in the Lord. So if you regard me as a partner, welcome him as you would me. And if he has done you any injustice or owes you anything, charge it to me”. In Paul’s Letter to the Colossians, Onesimus is again mentioned as accompanying Tychicus, the bearer of the letter. The pre-1970 Roman Martyrology incorrectly identifies Onesimus with the bishop of Ephesus who followed St. Timothy as bishop of Ephesus and who was stoned to death in Rome.

St.Philip of Jesus

1597

Franciscan martyr in Japan. A Spaniard born in Mexico City, he entered the Franciscans at Puebla but then departed the order in 1589 to journey to the Philippines as a trader. In 1590, he repented and returned to the Franciscan fold. His superiors commanded him to sail back to Mexico to be ordained a priest and while on the way, his ship was caught in a storm and driven into the waters of Japan. Landing in 1596, he was put to death by crucifixion at Nagasaki. He was canonized in 1862.

He was mentioned in the legendary Acts of Sts. Mans and Martha as being buried in the Catacomb of Pontian. His name, however, is not listed on the itineraries to the graves of the Roman martyrs. In the eighth century, his relics were translated to the Benedictine abbey of Tegernsee in Bavaria.

St. Richard

Feastday: February 7

Richard was the father of Saints Willibald, Winnebald, and Walburga. He was on a pilgrimage to Rome from his native Wessex, England, with two of his sons when he was stricken and died at Lucca, Italy. Miracles were reported at his tomb and he became greatly venerated by the citizens of Lucca, who embellished accounts of his life by calling him " king of the English ".

St. Sebbi

Also listed as Sebbe, he became the king of Essex (or the East Saxons) following the conversion of the kingdom by St. Cedd in 664. He ruled at a time when there was relative peace and the realm was under the domination of Mercia, a nearby kingdom. Sebbi abdicated after ruling thirty years and became a monk in London. He died there and was buried in the old St. Paul’s.

St. Veronica

The woman of Jerusalem who wiped the face of Christ with a veil while he was on the way to Calvary. According to tradition, the cloth was imprinted with the image of Christ's face." Unfortunately, there is no historical evidence or scriptural reference to this event, but the legend of Veronica became one of the most popular in Christian lore and the veil one of the beloved relics in the Church. According to legend, Veronica bore the relic away from the Holy Land, and used it to cure Emperor Tiberius of some illness. The veil was subsequently seen in Rome in the eighth century, and was translated to St. Peter's in 1297 by command of Pope Boniface VIII. Nothing is known about Veronica, although the apocryphal Acts of Pilate identify her with the woman mentioned in the Gospel of Matthew who suffered from an issue of blood. Her name is probably derived from Veronica , as was reported by Giraldus Cambrensis. The term was thus a convenient appellation to denote the genuine relic of Veronica's veil and so differentiate from the other similar relics, such as those kept in Milan. The relic is still preserved in St. Peter's, and the memory of Veronica's act of charity is commemorated in the Stations of the Cross. While she is not included in the Roman Martyrology, she is honored with a feast day. Her symbol is the veil bearing the face of Christ and the Crown of Thorns.
