  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I think the police officer has been arrested and charged hasn't he?
I'm sorry to hear that this has affected you directly Tanzanos. I hope your own son is not too traumatised.

Mike
Just like other policemen who committed murder; he will be released after 6 months to two years. The sentences passed in cases where police have killed innocent civilians have been nothing more than a slap on the wrist.

What can I say to my 15 year old son when he constantly listens to the video of his friend crying "I can't get up" after he was shot and then silence! while the cop who shot him can clearly be seen calmly walking away.

What can I as a parent tell him of organised society?

When I saw my son's friend in the coffin; it was like he was my son.

There are no words for injustice!

Very easy, though this is by far one of the worst ways to learn it. Trust no one. Outside of yourself, there are no good guys, and before long, you will realize you aren't a good guy as well. While in fact there are good people out there, you should assume opposite till proven otherwise.

I personally dislike the way I learned it with school authority, but this is so much worse. I feel sorry for him, and for you.

According to Al Jazeera, there were 30 of them, and the kid was hit by a ricochet from a warning shot that was fired upwards. SOP for police in Greece is 2 shots in the air, one in the ground for warning shots, right? Witnesses said he took aim and shot the kid, then again these could be the same people rioting against the government right now, and I doubt they'd be very willing to defend a police officer who just killed one of their own.

Or everything could be as you say, but I've seen too much for everything to be this clear cut.

The witnesses were neighbours and passers by from the surrounding block of flats (no affiliation to the deceased). Also forensics showed that the bullet entered the body from a downward trajectory (ricocheted from what; the clouds)? Lastly there is Video evidence of the scene.
Everyone (Tv commentators, Public Prosecutors, Politicians) agree that it was pure cold blooded murder.
The Cop hired the most notorious Lawyer who always represents Drug lords, and all sorts of known criminals.
His report has shocked the Nation with the obvious fabrications and deliberate lies. The lawyer went so far as to say that the 15 year old boy was a known criminal and troublemaker. This alone has really upset the country. The boy was a straight A student, who never had any record of misconduct. His school has only praise for the conduct of this boy. The policeman however is notorious for being a troublemaker and thus has earned the nickname in the force as "RAMBO".

This boy was on his way to a party to celebrate St Nicholas name day. My son was also invited but refrained due to another invitation. The boy and his friends were not even in the vicinity of the riots.

All Foreign news agencies get their reports from the Police and government. There is not a single politician who has declared that this was not murder.

Had you known this kid you would have laughed at the foreign press stories.

The police have allowed the hooded hoodlums to burn and loot while standing by but when students have a rally they attack them.

It is not a coincidence that the so called anarchists have been known to have ties with the police and always seem to do their rioting when a major scandal breaks out involving the government. Thus peoples attention is drawn to the riots while the scandal is quietly taken care off.

These so called anarchists are commonly known as the KNOWN UNKNOWN ones. Not a single one has ever been prosecuted. It is as if divine deliverance protects them.

It is a travesty to decency to even try to involve the boy in any criminal activity.

By the way his name is Alexandros Grigoropoulos. He was 15 years old when a 9mm round silenced his heart. His crime????

Also, not a single politician has said it wasn't murder because ONE: They are rioting against the PM Karamanlis and the ND, who's popularity has dwindled. He's pandering to the people in the hopes they won't hate him even more. TWO: PASOK is using this to ridicule the ND party.

Also, the policeman and his partner were arrested for murder. If they didn't mean to do it, and it was a ricochet, and they get off the people will react badly. If they didn't do it, yet still serve jail time, then the mob will be satiated by a couple scapegoats.

Politics are cold hearted.

You are obviously quoting the foreign press. Were you aware of Greek politics you would know that it is not that simple. Both Pasok and ND are being blamed for most of this country's ills.

You would know the way the KNOWN UNKNOWN have been used by both parties to hide their misdeeds.

You have to be here in order to understand the Byzantine mentality of local politics. Scandals that bring down governments in other countries are nothing more than bad news here.

BBC, CNN, Al Jazeera, and others; simply cannot see the whole picture. It is not that simple. It would take someone like Michael Moore to make a 2 hour documentary on the Hooded KNOWN UNKNOWN for the world to be able to understand the Riots taking place in my country right now.

Scapegoats? Shooting an unarmed child makes him a scapegoat?
I guarantee you my friend that WE have HAD ENOUGH. It is time Our governments RESPECTED the Laws of the Land. It is time to stop treating our police as if they are beyond the law.

I do not have feelings of hate. Far from it. My sadness is beyond hate. My grief is overwhelming; And I shall not let anyone Justify the killing of a Child.

There are no words for Injustice.

Does anyone actually have a link to the video that our friend Tanzanos is speaking of? I have searched but I have been unable to find one. If it showed on the news it should be available somewhere. No, I don't want to watch a child die but I do want to see if it was as clear cut as claimed.

This is one of a few videos.
The cops in their report stated that at the time of shooting they were running for their lives being chased by 30 bomb throwing hooded rioters and one of the cops shot in self defence. In this video filmed from a balcony; the two cops in the middle of the road shoot and leave the scene calmly walking away.

I couldn't see anything in that video honestly, I imagine there can be a lot of interpretations. I'm not going to say any more on the subject though, because I'm not aiming to aggravate anyone.

The important thing about this video (which is part of the prosecutors evidence) is that it totally refutes the claims of the policemen.

They claim that 30 hooded youths were after them; throwing fire bombs, pelting them with iron bars, stones, metal ashtrays, etc, and that they were running for their lives. That the one cop fired while running, shooting behind him.

The video show what ALL witnesses (not affiliated with victim) said; that the cop aimed shot and left calmly. This is clearly seen on the video.

Today Even the members of the government claim it to be cold blooded murder.

Also the cop is not a full fledged policeman but rather a Special Guard. This unit was created in 1999 to protect buildings and they receive only 4 months training.

The evidence is so overwhelmingly against the shooter that there is not a single politician (all parties), not a single judge or person involved in Law with the exception of the lawyer representing the shooter, who says this could be an accidental shooting.

Almost one week has gone by with riots throughout the whole country and not a single policeman lost his life. The reason? The populace of Greece are unarmed. So why use armed police? Unless you consider Molotov coctails, and stones as lethal weapons matched only by 9mm handguns!

According to Al Jazeera,

You get your news...from them? That might be your first problem.

As for your hatred of guns, you should be going to other way. If your populous was armed, the government might think twice before treating you like this.

We may have our problems over here, but the government doesn't hire people to start riots to keep their secrets. And our corrupt cops and politicians actually end up doing real time when they're finally convicted.

True; in your country politicians who commit crimes end up doing time. But in all honesty our streets are much safer than yours. Your culture is based on different principles. Just as we cannot adopt your ways so can you not do the same. Six days of total rioting and apart from the boy who had nothing to do with the riots. no one was seriously hurt or killed. Had guns played a role; then we would have many casualties.

Your country and my country share very little in social structure. This does not mean that either is better or worse.

To you the fact that a boy was shot to death means nothing more than news! To us it is a rare thing and has shocked our nation.

We as a nation have a dislike for handguns and are happy to do without them.

Still nothing will bring the boy back.

What more can I say. I just hope this whole affair will force our politicians to reconsider their arrogance.

What exactly is wrong with Al Jazeera?

I get my news from many sources, as anyone should. At the time, they seemed to be covering it most extensively.

It came out that the bullet has ricocheted:

The two officers involved in Saturday's shooting were remanded into custody Wednesday pending trial. One is charged with premeditated manslaughter and the other with acting as an accomplice.

On Thursday, their lawyer, Alexis Kougias, said initial results from a ballistics test show the officer did not fire directly at the teen. Instead, the bullet ricocheted off another object before hitting the boy in the chest.

Officials fear that if the ricochet theory pans out, it could inflame tensions and spark more riots.

The initial examination shows the bullet taken from the victim was scraped and deformed on one side, Kougias said. That indicates the bullet was one of two warning shots fired by police into the air, which then ricocheted and hit the boy.
CNN

Of course, we can expect the Left to potentially launch into conspiracy theories and to act as if the story above was all contrived. However, at the end of the day it is proving something that the Left inherently denies as a fundamental truth:

The Police are often the good guys and the protestors chucking rocks at their vehicles and getting ready to hurl petrol bombs are in the wrong.
Hopefully the name of this Police Officer will be cleared.

Ha,

So I guess what?

It is not a situation of absolute police brutality but a mistake.

So should we burn more Citibanks? Or should we disco dance like the good old days?

Of course, we can expect "the Right" to preemptively construct conspiracy theories about "the Left" constructing conspiracy theories.
