It is soooo true! I know when I was growing up, the slightest meaness of tone or words discouraged me to no end! I was always told to be quiet...children must be seen not heard...things like that. I think it caused me to become just that...a quiet introvert. I didn't make a lot of friends that way. Later in life, my grandmother always gave me encouraging words. It really does lift the spirit and empower you! Our children need that from us! They look to us for that empowerment! And according to God's word, that's what we should be giving all others...encouragement!

The first encouraging words I got from my family was bout 3 years ago. When my eldest brother looked at me and said I'm proud of you.


Until then I was getting told how horrible I was by my mother.

I didn't have much friends. i was and still am and introvert. I want more for Cecil.

I think communication is the biggest thing. As I've gotten older my relationship with my parents have blossomed tremendously due to the fact that we actually talk. My dad - as human as it sounds - never thought to talk to us about the things we should be hearing. We never had conversations. I always thought he was this awful neglectful dad because he wasn't meeting my standard of what a parent was - when really he was meeting the standard that was given to him.

It turns out my dad was alway berated by my grandfather to "get a haircut and get a real job" no matter what he was doing with his life. His real dad died when he was just little so he doesn't remember much of him. He thought he was doing his best by sheltering us from the world (which did do a lot), but he didn't talk to us and joked with us through sarcasm and other adult humor like that - which we thought was him making fun of us... he was truly repentant when he realized this.

It's definitely helped me with my kids. If they have questions I share the answer with them as age appropriately but honestly as I can. If I see a questioning look - I ask them what they're thinking. I really think talking to our kids as though every moment we were training and teaching them about life is how we should raise our kids. Somewhere in time many people have forgotten that their children are people too.

So there is power in words... and lack of words!!

I agree KristiLee. Growing up not hearing those words of encouragement leads you to a sad life. Even if it's not from your parents, but it should be, words of encouragement can make us believe in ourselves. We really have to love ourselves. Otherwise what do we have to give to the people we love?
My father has been gone now for 5 years. As a little girl, I remember him as this big brooding man with big hands and a temper. He rarely said "I love you" to any of us, and when we went to kiss him goodnight, he would turn his head. Instead of a hug, he would "pat" us on the back. That lack of affection really did a job on me as an adult and the relationships I chose to be in.
Later in life, my father had a heart attack and almost died. It took that kind of "bump on the head" for him to realize that life is precious! From that moment, literally, he told us he loved us often, and hugged us often! He later developed cancer and did not recover. However, the day b4 he passed, he accepted Jesus into his heart!! what a blessing!

So hug your children/husband often, tell them you love them, give them lots of praise!! So that they may have a joyful life! Amen!

oh yes! let's see...friday we forgot to take Stephen to preschool!! Nick didn't have school that day, so we went shopping and had lunch...by the time we realized Stephen was supposed to be in school, it was already 1pm!! (he goes from 12:30-3pm). Anyway, stephen was ok about it!

Saturday, I went to a scrapbooking crop at my church. I was socializing more than i was scrapping!! i only got two pages done!

Sunday, we went to church and i worked in the toddler nursery. when we got home, we cleaned up the garage and our front porch, and got rid of a lot of junk!

we were busy beavers!

How was everyone else's weekend?

Mine was pretty exciting. Friday I spent the day with the kids while dh worked and stayed the night down at his brothers. I got lots done around the house and spent the evening in quiet reflection during devotions.

Saturday, dh came home and we took the girls to the McD's playground and we spent the time talking as they played (they are so fun to watch!). We talked so much and it was such a blessing to just sit without interruption! Definitely something we plan to continue - the McD's playground! Woo-oo!

Then Saturday evening dh went to watch the UFC fight on tv with a group of his friends so I went to visit my parents. God was in our midst and it was such, such such a blessing!!!!! We left each other on FIRE!

Then, Sunday morning we went to church and our church family blessed our Pastor's with a semi-surprise service (they knew we had the day set-aside for them, but they had no clue what we were doing!). We had a PPT presentation of letters, audio, pictures, and video of all the things we loved about them and appreciated them for. Then we took up an offering and they were blessed with over $250!! With a congregation of just 35 active members that is a great turnout! Then we had the kids get up front with letters saying: "THANK YOU Pastor Jeff and Pastor Laura" which prepared the stage for me to sing "Thank You" by Ray Boltz.

By the time I got near the end of the song they were both crying and I started to choke up. But I continued through and at just the right time I motioned for the congregation to join me (as planned) as we all sang the chorus to them ("Thank you for giving to the Lord, I am a life that was changed. Thank you for giving to the Lord, I am so glad you gave."). As you might imagine - my pastor and his wife (also my mother and father in-law) were sobbing -as were the congregation. We then prayed over them and went downstairs for a delicisous potluck lunch!! It was a beautiful day!!!!!

Such a great weekend! God is truly awesome (in all context of the word)!!!
