  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I wish I could use Stephen's "I love to run" quote honestly, but it would be a bold faced lie. As much as I want to love to run... I SO dislike it!

I weight train, practice yoga and Pilates, rollerblade, and spend lots of time doing physical activity, but I haven't found the appeal to running. (Occasionally, I'll sprint train, but I only go kicking and screaming.)

If anyone has tips on how to catch runners fever and become addicited, please let me know. I'm sure it would be a great addition to my training... if I could ever learn to like it.

fish & webgirl :D

the most common problem with people starting running is that they do too much too soon...and get demotivated or injured. building up from run/walk sessions is the way to go, you'll see improvements and give your bones/joints/muscles time to strengthen to the impact of running
i think they have some good beginners schedules at www.runnersworld.co.uk

happy to give advice

Congrats on running again. I love to run as well infact I just did my first half marathon this summer at the Va beach rock and roll half marathon. I know nothing about taking a cold shower after a workout or run but ice is always a great thing because when you run your knees swell and ice helps to lower the swelling. Keep up the running. When there was 70-80 year old men and women that beat me in the race I am highly motivated to get in better shape then I was for next year lol.

I run college track so I have to run every day. Even when we don't practice.....I tend to run every afternoon as a habit. Running relives stress for me.
I used to [jokingly] refer to it as "running away from my problems".

I used to LOVE running. ran track and CC in high school, but being also being a competitive VB player, my knees are not what they used to be (not to mention my ankles that i've broken twice).

Instead of running now, I used to be into rollerblading A LOT. much less strain on the joints and just as good of a cardio workout. I need to get into it again, i'm feeling the over-30 weight coming on!

I just started running again. It's only been about a week so far. Does anyone know the benefits of taking a cold shower after a heavy workout or a long run?

i wouldnt have a cold shower...
but i would dunk my legs in an ice cold bath (as cold as you can manage)... this technique is used by several good distance runners.. and is said to speed muscle recovery (i can vouch for this), allowing the next training session to be harder/more effective.

as for why, my theory is that the cold causes the blood to rush away from the surface, flushing all the lactic acid & toxins out of the muscles. Similar to a post run (effluage) (spelling?) massage.

I ran cross country in highschool, i wasn't very good, but I enjoyed it and I worked hard at it. Unfortunately my knees seem to be constantly degenerating for some reason, I can't run anymore (unless someone is coming after me or something) :) I wish that I could though because I enjoyed it a lot. When I was in cc, I remember a certain smell, its hard to explain, I always thought it was just the fall weather, but I've had the same smell when I run in the summer spring winter, whenever, so I think it might have something to do with adrenaline? anyone else ever experience anything like that?
