Roomate nudity

Hey everyone, I have kind of a silly question. I'm dorming at college and I have an awesome roomate. However, I get a little uneasy getting changed in the room with him and being naked together. I don't know why I feel so uncomfortable. Is it wrong for two people of the same gender to be naked together?

I mean if your changing it's not weird but if you are like just hanging out naked together it might be kind of weird.

There is nothing wrong with it. Though if you're uncomfortable, talk to your roommate about it, or take your clothes and go to the bathrooms and change there. I know in my dorms, the closet doors were big enough that you could hide behind them and change and your roommate wouldn't be able to see anything anyway. If it really makes you uncomfortable though I would just go change in the bathroom.

This is good advice. Just play it cool too- don't make it seem like a big deal if you choose to discuss this with your roommate.

Is this your first semester rooming together? If so, you'll probably get more comfortable once you've spent some more time with him and perhaps it won't be as big of a deal to change with him in the room.

Freud said something of this but his psychoanalytic theory is only a theory. There are a multitude or theories and explanations.

Anyhow, in addition to all aforesaid (e.g., locker rooms, sport, swimming pools), no.

From a non-theistic point of view, do whatever.

From a theist point of view, nakedness, shame, and vanity needn't go hand in hand. It's unlikely that the room mate nudity would be or lead to scenarios that are biblically forbidden (e.g., one of you were to strip the other against their wishes, one of you were to carry out something sinful such as somewhat standard collegiate "parties"/orgies/premarital coitus, running across and around campus in the nude/indecent exposure).

I also don't condone extreme naturism but, as it's an awfully natural thing (e.g., one is born naked, one is likely to bath and shower in the nude, one is likely to engage in carnal relations largely in the nude), there is no particular reason as to be prudish, puritanical, or narrow-minded about nakedness.

Establish a set of ground rules with your roomie, and not simply about nakedness.

If you are just changing clothes there is nothing wrong with that. I think that you will become more and more used to the fact of changing in the same room as your roommate. I know that last year(my first year in college), I didn't feel comfortable changing in front of my roomie and I actually utilized the trick of changing behind the closet door. This year my new roomie and I have become more comfortable with changing in the same room. We both stand in the general vicinity of our closets/sinks, but don't really hide behind them anymore. We have found that changing our shirts/skirts/pants is something we can comfortably do in the room, when the other is there. But when it comes to changing our underclothing we still either change in the bathroom, or wait until the other leaves the room for a few minutes.

If you are not doind anything sexual or lusting it is not too bad in my opinion. But what do you thing God would think?

You're uncomfortable because there's this odd idea that we shouldn't be naked unless we're taking a shower, and certainly not around another person who isn't a sexual partner.

you share a room, it's going to get a lot less awkward as time goes on. If it really bothers you, talk to him and change in the bathroom, if that's possible.

The nakedness thing comes bundled with college dorm life. There's nothing about your situation that sounds like cause for concern; it's a normal part of sharing a cramped living space, and eventually it will get to the point that neither of you are phased by it.

My old dorm had "z-shaped" rooms, with about 5 feet of each side offset from the other - this gave us a little bit of privacy. If you find you can't just "make it work" with regards to changing in front of your roommate, perhaps you could arrange your side of the room with your dresser and such to give you a small space where your lower body can't be seen to change in.

To be honest, if I were your room mate, I would feel more uncomfortable with you having a problem with it. Just relax. It's getting changed and everyone needs to do it. No need to have the heebie-jeebies.

I bought a room divider. That way we both had privacy, and it helped for the times when my roommate wanted to watch television in the room and I either wanted to sleep or study.

It adds some privacy into a room that essentially offers none. We're only human and we do need some sort of seperation to stay sane!

Hey, being naked is natural. Just don't stare, that's just weird. When Jesus came back and found Peter and John on the lake fishing they were naked. And Peter threw on clothes as he jumped into the water to meet Christ. And in Isaiah 20:2, God told Isaiah to strip naked and walk around, and if I'm not mistaken, that lasted about 3 years. haha.

Don't do it if you feel awkward. It's going to be more awkward trying to force yourself to feel comfortable and you're gonna feel like crap if you don't get there.

Furthermore, Noah was pretty angry when he found out that his son, Ham, had seen him naked, in Genesis 9:20-27 -

Also, you don't want to cause anyone to lust...it's possible.

It could just be that you're not used to it yet. When I took up swimming, I hated the large, open changing rooms where there were always people dressing and showering. I felt self-conscious, so just changed in the bathroom. Now I can change out in the regular area but I still like to get it done quickly because I feel awkward. There's nothing wrong with leaving the room for a minute when your roommate changes or just going into the bathroom to dress.

However, do you feel this way about anyone, or just this guy? If you've had experience doing team sports or using locker rooms, does this always feel like an issue, or is it him? If it's just him, you might want to ask yourself what your feelings are and then deal with them. I'd suggest praying too.
