  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I think individual Jewish Christians and individual Gentile Christians are being addressed in Romans 9, but as different groups. The individual would be asking Paul this about the other individuals.

I agree with your post and would make a historical point for context. Remember that the congregation in Rome had originally been mixed Jew and Gentile, perhaps predominantly Jewish, with Aquila and Priscilla as leaders.

They were exiled from Rome by Claudius, and later (three to five years) allowed to return by Nero.

That means the congregation in Rome had carried on for three to five years as a purely Gentile congregation, then Priscilla, Aquila, and other Jewish Christians returned.

I speculate that this generated even more friction than there might have otherwise been--the Gentile Christians having been their own leaders for several years would not have willingly resumed "little brother" status to the Jewish Christians.

And I think we see Paul addressing both groups in that context.
