Which alternatives? Abortion, is very difficult on the mother, when that decision is made, normally its not an easy decision....and one not easily forgotten

Alternatives such as having the child be raised by an incompetent parent and lead a miserable life. And true, I've heard it is very traumatic. But a bad childhood would be too. In an ideal world, every woman who found herself pregnant would make sure her child had a good future, and there would be people willing to provide that good future, but this isn't an ideal world.

I think you would be surprised. I worked in a hospital that did not allow abortions, but we had women come from different places to have their babies adopted. One baby we had-a beautiful little girl, was born with brain stem only. She was up for adoption-she was to be adopted from day one- the adoptive parents still wanted her, birth defect & all. She lived 6 mos, but the parents loved her. I can tell you different cases all day long, and again, you'd be surprised. Many people have the love in their hearts to take care of a child, anyone that God hands to them. In our country, especially!

We always hear about adoption in these debates over abortion. The problem is that people in general do not want to adopt just any child.

First most people want to adopt babies. If a child makes it past the age of four without being adopted the odds decrease significantly that an adoptive parent will be found.

Second, most people want white or, in some cases, Asian babies. The adoption rate for black babies is very low.

Third, most people want babies that are physically and mentally perfect. Those suffering from physical or mental disabilities are rarely adopted.

I have a dear friend who is a social service caseworker in a rural area of Pennsylvania. She has children who she would love to see adopted. One boy who is around nine has tried to kill himself several times. One girl keeps cutting herself. No one wants these children.

Yes, there are a few wonderful people such as the ones Catholic Christian mentioned who are willing to adopt older or minority or special needs children. God bless these individuals. The problem is that there are not enough of them.

Please don't talk about adoption as if it is an automatic thing because it is not.

People abuse all kinds of things, you know? Give them good healthful things to eat, and they instead eat processed fat from McDonald's. Give them alternatives to using fossil fuels with gas/electric cars, and they decide to buy SUV's that get ten miles per gallon and then complain about gas costs.

I kinda agree with Tony Campolo, though, that the fact that someone else might abuse something doesn't mean we aren't better people for giving it to them anyway.

I just found some of your comments scary. If we were actually talking, we probably wouldn't have these problems, you know. I could ask right away and say, "Whoa, so you're saying women who get into these messes should just bug off?" and you could say, "No, Rae, I'm saying I think they need to take more care of what they're doing," and then we'd like get along and stuff.

I'm sorry I got so heated up. This is something that trips my emotional triggers.

Okay, I'm glad this discussion has ended on a peaceful note (at least I assume it's ended- I would say most of the points involved have been thoroughly discussed). I actually am semi-vegetarian, though I've been known to eat fish and poultry when my parents make it and sometimes when I'm at school, camp, or an MUN conference and the only option to eat is something with red meat in it I'll eat whatever it is without making a big fuss about it. I shall be logging off in a couple minutes, Mom doesn't want me spending so much time on the computer and I tend to avoid upsetting her any more than necessary.

A few things:

I don't normally post here, but abortion is one of my favourite topics of discussion.

Personally, I think abortion is wrong and it is a sin, but I think abortion should be legalized, because it is a woman's choice whether she wants to abort her child or not. Sure, many of the cases are by women that screwed up and are trying to get out of it by aborting the kid, but it's still their choice, not my. I don't like a lot of things that people do, but that does not mean there should be a law that prevents people from lying or swearing.

Also, I look at this from a realistic point of view. The girls that really want to get their kids aborted will go to great length to do so, even if there is a law against it. I'd like to see more education by the government on this issue. Teach people what's involved in abortion.

As for some of the arguments about adoption. I think that you shouldn't say that abortion is okay, because many kids will not have the chance of getting adopted. If you look at many countries around the world. The kids there suffer way worse fate then kids in foster homes in America. Does that mean they should not be allowed to live?

Here in the US, part of the problem is not that there are not good homes waiting....its the red tape! I have learned its easier to foster & then adopt from there than to try & go the other direction.

It is the same here, and, I think, in most of Europe.
There are far more people wanting to adopt than children available, and it is the red tape slowing the system that slows things down.

Which is why, of course, you get scandals in abortion, with people selling kids which are imported to the west - one of the foulest trades there is.

They all have a right to life. it's just bad that someone would eliminate a
tiny, defenseless being because of inconvenience, saying that its just a mass of tissue.

I say they develop technology to transplant unwanted fetuses to another womb of someone who wants a child.
