  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Does anyone else have a problem with this? If someone called you for spiritual advice, would you name-drop on public radio, who it was and what she asked? It kind of reminded me of the time Dr. Phil showed up at the hospital where Brittney Spears was and talked to the press after his visit.

I thought it was very unprofessional. Am I alone in this? If you are a minister out there, what would you do?

Oh my gosh!!!
It's WAY wrong! Name drop much??

Sorry, but I call that BETRAYAL - betrayal of her and betrayal of trust.
Now we see his true colors don't we? He's interested in his own popularity & importance.
That's a sure sign of it.

I remember when Dr. Phil did that w/ Britney Spears too - it looked to me like he was just trying to commercialize her trouble as entertainment.
If he TRULY cared about her, he wouldn't of had his intervention attempt w/ her on camera!!

What is going on? I agree with you and that can really do alot of harm to people who want to reach out for help but won't becuz they're afraid they'll be "outed" for it.

It must of been super difficult for David Duchovney to publically get sex addiction rehab - many probly won't do that.

I already reject Rick Warren for his emergent church dogma -- this just puts the cherry on top [for me]

I can't watch the video because I'm posting this from my phone. Based upon the responses to your question, I'm going to conclude that Rick Warren dropped the name of a celeb when telling an anecdote or giving a sermon? Is that correct? This must be a trend with preachers from California because nobody drops more names than Dr. Robert Schuller. Is it wrong? I can't say one way or the other since it depends upon what kind of info was divulged and how it was obtained. If Warren is sharing information he got from a one-on-one meeting with a congregant then yes, it is wrong. It would also be wrong if he divulged information obtained during a confession. But that's not a likely scenario to happen with Rick.

Palin just dropped a notch in my book for even considering advice from this guy
There's alot of people who don't know anything yet about the emergent church -
Further, we don't know the nature of her issue - it could be that she needed to talk w/ a hugely popular religious person who was in the public spotlight & had specific questions about something of a non-spiritual nature.
After all, he had just recently hosted a political interview w/ McCain and Obama... so we shouldn't presume to think that she was asking him about God & her own spiritual issues.
She has her own pastor to consult about that stuff.

She hasn't dropped any notches in my book - I can't judge her on information I don't have. But I'm sure right about now that Palin has a real good grasp on the type of person Warren is now!

He just lost integrity on this stunt. I'm not attributing any extra disgust becuz I already dislike him, I'd be this disgusted no matter who the Pastor was who publicized her asking them for advice.
Very rude and inconsiderate!

This is a total negative for me. Why is she calling this fool?

There's much better people to call and they aren't looking for attention like him.
It's not our business to know why she's calling him or anyone and we cannot judge people on information we don't have.

Now you can see why it's so rude and STUPID for Warren to have just shared that she sought him for help/info then doesn't tell you the nature of it!
People make judgments either way - if they love Warren, the judgment will go to her favor, if they dislike Warren, the judgment will be against her for going to him.

Please be careful about judging in something like this - we don't know enough to do so.

Is shows a lack of judgment in my book~

"Actually, she called me yesterday," Warren said, adding: "The question I asked her was, "How can I pray for you? ... She asked me to send her some Bible verses on how do you deal with all of the unfair, unjust attacks and the mean-spirited criticism that comes in."

She could have gotten that info from her pastor or you...this is really embarassing..

He did sell a lot of books...he's really popular...his critics are considered unenlightened in the modern evangelical world...

Well you can judge her any way you want, I'm not going to.
There are lots of great Christians that have NO CLUE about Warren's agenda & the emergent church.
They know about His best seller Spirit Driven book, his charity work & huge church following - nothing more.

We see all kinds of posts here from people with Christian icons of people we know are Christians but yet say ignorant things, have less spiritual education, lack some spiritual wisdom, don't know someone's negative spiritual reputation...etc. etc.
I have met some FANTASTIC, on fire Christians who happened to love Rod Parsley & donate to his church.
I knew a wonderful Christian girl who loved Kenneth Copeland's devotionals every day. I'd rather have sharp bamboo sticks shoved under my fingernails than to get near his spiritual material :doh:lol, but she was a great Christian soldier.
We don't spiritually devalue them do we? I'd hope not. Not everyone is identical to us spiritually & maybe God hasn't revealed something to them yet.

I can guarantee she knows more about him now after he publicized her contact.

This is nothing to take her down a notch over in my book -- that is unless you had her on too a high a pedestal to take her down from from in the first place?

I'd be alot more dissappointed if she went to Joel Osteen - that would say alot more to me than Warren who's publicized reputation isn't near as bad as Osteen's in the evangelical Christian community after the Larry King debaucle.

Ya know, I think that's it...

With the way this world is Jim, it's good that they'de see her going to him and not another Pastor who preaches the uncompromised word of God.
The more "Christian" someone appears today, the worse their chances being elected in a country who's rejecting Christ.

They'll accept the philosophy stuff of Jesus - but get into specifics & obedience to God's moral laws & watch them jump ship immediately.

I'm still amazed Obama isn't more attacked for his assoc. w/ Rev. Wright!
If Palin had that type of assoc. she'd be crucified by the left.

But Obama did cut ties with Rev. Wright, eventually. We'll have to wait and see if there is further contact between Palin & Warren. I don't believe Obama didn't know how extreme Rev. Wright was in his black liberation theology. There's no way you can attend a church for 20 years and not pick up on the theology of the pastor. You bring up a good point when you say we don't know the reason Palin went to Warren. Since he did recently interview both McCain and Obama, the conversation could have been political. Or maybe Palin wanted an unbiased opinion on whether or not she really is 'a pig wearing lipstick.' LOL

Maybe she was asking what color lipstick goes with pig best? (but any girl knows it would be bright PINK!)
:p

But it took Obama a long time to dissown Wright, he wouldn't for awhile.
Some of the extreme stuff from her previous pastors was mentioned, but she had left that church, so they can't pin it on her.

Anyways, that's the whole point, 20 years of that guy? & called him his spiritual leader?
Obama's wife clearly learned more than Obama did - she had the right attitude, she's just now proud of this country :doh: It only took a few decades till her husband could hold office.

I believe that if Obama loses the election, he'll go back to Rev. Wright and his church and that theology. He's downplaying what Rev. Wright and that church believe and teach to get votes. I don't believe for a second that Obama has really rejected the teachings that he probably believes helped him to get where he is.

this leaves a bad taste in my mouth. as far as I'm concerned, it's exploiting people for his own personal gain for publicity and pseudo credibility by virtue of saying "look who came to ME!"
Yeah, that sort of covers my feelings on it, too. It feels... grubby. But it's Rick Warren. Seems fairly true to form, really.

Incidentally, I can't stand him, so I don't know if am seeing something bad unnecessarily, but in that article, he's quoted as saying "... faith is just a worldview." Does anyone else disagree *strongly*? That to me reads like he's essentially relegating Christianity to something ancillary and flighty. Ya know? Meh, s'just a world view. It can shift with the sands as all world views do.

What a *terrible* witness :(
