  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

I think both him and Miley Cyrus are criticized too much
they are young and rich, they will do dumb things
don't really care for his music, but it is not horrible

Wow, my little sister would approve of your answer since she adores JB and I have to see his ugly mug everyday when I open my eyes. I feel like dressings in my closet since there are life size posters staring at me. :o

Hypothetically, if Roman Catholicism, Eastern Orthodox, Anglicanism and Lutheranism were not church options for you, can you think of anything that you would find as an acceptable place to call 'home'?

For example: you're on a research expedition to McMurdo Station in Antarctica, and let's pretend for a second that every church except for the above four have available worship services. Would there be any in particular you would be able to attend?

I know, I know, I like to make things difficult... :p

well when I was in morocco I attended a nondenominational service most sundays (I also took a taxi to the next city over to attend mass when I woke up early enough on sundays)

so in your scenario, it would depend more on the community then on theology, since the EO and RCC are no longer options

well you did not mention Oriental Orthodox, was that just an oversight on your part? because I would attend Coptic services if there was no Catholic Church, I would even attend Coptic over Eastern Orthodox because in my experience the Copts are more welcoming to Latin Christians

Yes forgetting the Oriental Orthodox was a mistake on my part, but I guess that makes it fair game. I've always heard good things about Coptic churches.

If you were in such a scenario where a Coptic church was your best option, would it make some of the theological differences easier to navigate or would you still find yourself bumping up against those obstacles frequently?

well to be fair, the Oriental Orthodox Churches, in particular the Coptic Church, are closer to the Catholic Church then the Eastern Orthodox

maybe I am not familiar enough with the Coptic Church, but I do not think there would be any major theological differences that a layman would run into

as we talked about before, I am pretty convinced of the truth of the Catholic Church

No argument here.

Although I never realized Catholics considered Oriental Orthodoxy to be closer than the Eastern Orthodox. I figured by virtue of being non-Chalcedonian they were even further away from Catholicism than Eastern Orthodoxy.

well I am not really talking theologically
I mean more socially
like in Egypt Christianity is a minority
so there is more of a mindset of "we have to stick together"
where in Greek and Russian cultures there is more of an emphasis on authority and the history of the crusades and just more bad blood so to speak
atleast that is how I see it, and that is how my limited interactions with arab Christians have been

That makes a lot of sense, putting aside some of the pettier things to focus on what we have in common. I like that.

psalm 41:4 has been in my mind a lot recently
I said: O Lord, be thou merciful to me : heal my soul, for I have sinned against thee.

that is the Douay-Rheims translation of the Bible, it is like the Catholic King James Bible, came out around the same time

What is your favorite part of the book of Genesis?

WOW, interesting question!
I have been reading parts of Genesis recently

I am very simple, and I tend to view the Bible as more literal, I know many people do not agree with me
just because something is historically true, does not mean it is also not symbolically true
like for example, in the Book of Joshua, we have the tribes of Israel entering the Holy Land and driving out the pagan peoples
I think this really happened, and God commanded the people of Israel to wipe out entire cities
but I also see this as speaking of how God sanctifies the individual, with a person getting "invaded" by grace, and sins being wiped out totally

so I have been reading chapters 10 and 11 of Genesis
specifically the parts about King Nimrod the Hunter in chapter 10, the first king among men and a "mighty hunter before the Lord"
the Douay Rheims footnotes say that Nimrod hunted other humans

and chapter 11 has the story of the Tower of Babel
where mankind built a Tower and God brought the confusion of different languages

so I do think these are historically true, but I have been trying to think about deeper meanings
for if they were just simple history, would it really merit being put in the Scriptures?

the Tower of Babel.... all mankind was united... but it was not united in God, it was united in pride, maybe strife and confusion is just the natural result of such false unity?

I would like to think more on this, do you have any thoughts on this? or do you know of any Church Fathers or great Saints who talked about these issues?

Do you think I'm one of those annoying atheists? Lol.
lol I think you are one of those annoying future Catholics :p

lol but seriously
I think you are a funny guy who is going through a lot of problems right now
I think you have a keen sense of right and wrong, and a dry sense of humor
you are honest about your suffering, but you are able to talk about other things too

you do not have faith in Christianity, but you have NEVER treated me like an idiot for believing in God
and the people you do treat like idiots.... well they are idiots and deserve to be openly mocked

and you have saints for avatars, how can I hate on you after that?
