In the height of the pandemic in NZ, we could order takeaways, but couldn't go and eat in restaurants, but once we irradicated the disease we were fine to go to restaurants.

A substantial body of evidence shows that that is false: getting vaccinated increases — not lowers — your protection against the coronavirus.

First, it’s true that people who have been vaccinated or boosted are more susceptible to becoming infected with the omicron variant than they were to past variants. The variant, which has been the dominant variant in the U.S. since the winter and now comprises several different subvariants, is more transmissible and more immune evasive. This has led to a surge of reinfections and infections in people who are vaccinated. In that sense, vaccinated people are at higher risk than they were before. But there’s no evidence they’re more likely to contract the virus than a similar person who is unvaccinated.

Multiple studies indicate the vaccinated or boosted are afforded at least some temporary protection against omicron infection, albeit at a reduced level compared with previous variants.

A study of patients in Southern California, for instance, found that two doses of the Moderna vaccine reduced the risk of omicron infection by 44% in the first three months, compared with 80% for the delta variant, with a further decline over time — to around just a 6% reduction as much as a year out, versus 61% with delta. A booster increased protection against infection with both variants, but protection was not as high against omicron.

Other analyses, including ones from Denmark and the Veterans Health Administration, have found similar results.

“The relative protection with omicron is less compared to prior variants (especially with just 2 doses rather than 3), but that protection still exists,” University of Pennsylvania infectious disease fellow Dr. Aaron Richterman told us in an email. “There is a lot of solid evidence supporting this.”

To me I think covid varients will be around for a long time like the flu. We did the same thing but it's not eradicated.

I believe people should have freedoms, but during a deadly global pandemic I am ok with people losing their freedoms temporarily to save lives.

I believe the government should fund essential services such as schools, roads, hospitals etc, these things shouldn't just be for the wealthy.
I believe a government should create and enforce laws for the goal of making society safe, stable and thriving. But I don't believe that government should be telling us how to live, who to love, what to eat, and what to do with our private parts or what to do with our wombs. Would I recommend everyone eat all of the things listed in the picture on a daily basis, obviously not, but if someone was going to have a daily routine of
- Sweetened Mocha
- 3 sodas per day
- Big Mac value meal with a large milkshake
- Lemon Cake for dessert
- Big chocolate brownie for a late night snack

That routine in the UK ends with a total caloric count that's not as wildly off of the base metabolic rate for most people...that routine in the US puts most people at double the recommended caloric intake for the day.

I would say that Obesity is an epidemic in the US.
I noted the statistics before. 300,000 people die from it every year, and there are 4 million hospitalizations every year that are either the direct or indirect result of it. (not to mention the millions requiring expensive medication to manage the chronic conditions that stem from it)

Plain and simple, people willfully choosing to eat that way are putting just as much damage on the overall healthcare system as people who willfully choose not to get vaccinated.

It's funny how the parties did something of a flip-flop on this issue.

Many defended the soda restrictions in New York, and defended Cali's food dye restriction bill when republicans were calling it a "skittles ban", now it's a 180.

It's like people have the mindset of "because this person is wrong about one thing, and is aligned with someone I hate, I have to pretend that they can't be right about anything"

When did I say that?

During the pre-vaccination period of the pandemic, we irradicated the disease entirely from our population.

We still had some coming in at the border, and all people coming in from overseas were put into isolation/quarantine for 2 weeks. But for the rest of us, no one was catching the disease, because it wasn't in society. We didn't need masks and we could go to restaurants, pubs, and even concerts and sport stadiums, because we had no Covid at all.

At times it came back to certain areas (mostly Auckland) because some people snuck out of quarantine, but we stamped it out again.
It wasn't until Omicron that we struggled to stamp that out, and once most people were vaccinated then we opened our borders and obviously it came in and pretty much everyone caught it.

Yes NZ has had deaths. We are half the size of Sweden. We have 5 million people, Sweden have around 10 million.
Sweden had 28,670 Covid deaths, NZ had 4,538 Covid deaths which is more than 6 times less than Sweden, accounting for population, we got 3x less deaths than Sweden.

The reason why we had less deaths than Sweden isn't because we have better hospitals and equipment, it's because we collectively were able to protect our society by using prevaccine protective methods such as masks and social distancing which bought us time to get people vaccinated before they caught the disease.
Sweden went with the do nothing approach, just pretend like there is no pandemic.

A farmer has ragwort on his farm. He works really hard to irradicate it "from his farm". And eventually he does so. No ragwort on his farm at all. Note that he hasn't irradicated it from the entire world, nor has he irradicated it from his neighbors' farms.

He enjoys a period of time where his farm has no ragwort but eventually due to the wind some ragwort seeds blow onto his farm and eventually a ragwort plant grows again on his farm, he then kills that new plant and is back to a period where there are no ragwort plants on his farm.

Except we've already established that there is no good evidence that wearing masks in public "protects" anyone. What about he people that had to face the pandemic daily so that you could order takeaways? Do you care about their health? I mean, you got to stay "safer at home", but someone had to go to work and make your food just like they always did. The government decided to label these people "essential workers" to make them sound special, but in reality, they were the ones that faced the pandemic on a daily basis so that the laptop class could be "safer at home".

Oh, and NZ never eradicated the disease.
