  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Not any more than the fact that the air I am breathing was in other people´s lungs before.
Eeeurghh! No more breathing for me!

Mouths, on the other hand: I've know some very pleasant mouths.

Does it bother anyone when at a restaurant to realize the silverware you are using was earlier inside another's mouth? Even if it was thoroughly washed in hot water?

In your home is the silverware identified by person? Do you keep a separate set for guests?

What about the handrail on the escalator? The door knob on the public toilet? And if you are worrying about where the cutlery has been, how about where the chef's fingers have been? Fortunately, I have matters of substance to worry about, but an interesting thought.

There is an interesting effect related to this, which involves the transfer or association of emotional response from original owner to their used items; so, for example, people who were quite happy to put on a clean but second-hand shirt, became very reluctant when told it was Jeffrey Dahmer's (the cannibalistic serial killer), or Hitler's, as if their disgust at the owner had transferred to the owner's shirt.

It only bothers me when I see people not following the health code. Like when they use the restroom and do not wash their hands before handling food.

If the reuse of silverware jeopardizes people's health it would be against the law. It is not against the law. Therefore, unless you do not trust medical science, public health officials and our political institutions then there is no reason to let it bother you.

On the other hand, it bothers me a little knowing that the instruments being used at a dentist's office to clean my teeth were used to clean somebody else's teeth. Meanwhile, I saw where somebody had made a list of things to look for when choosing a dentist. One of the things the writer said to look for was if a dentist uses a sterilizer. A sterilizer for dental instruments is not standard and is optional?!

Foodborne bacteria on silverware that hasn't been cleaned properly could be a problem, but I'm not allergic to human beings.

I am a lot more worried about using a pillow or a bed that someone else slept in. AT least the silverware can be sanitized. Also you can polish the silverware a bit with your napkin to remove any deposit of soap or hard water. I have learned after I exercise and use equipment that others have used to wash my hands right away. That helps me to stay healthy. You notice that doctors wash their hands a lot and they are usually pretty healthy. They also filter the air they breath in hospitals and that helps also.

Except when it's not, and has streaks or chunks on it. Almost all
germs die when dry. So it's it clean, bacteria dies fast.

Your mouth is already one of the most bacteria-infested places on earth. But your bugs are on their home turf, and will out-compete anyone else's oral bacteria you might encounter. Most swallowed bacteria won't survive the acidic environment in the stomach. And you also have mucosal antibodies in other parts of the GI tract that can handle the rest.

Of course, there are bacteria that resist your defenses to cause illness, like Listeria, Salmonella, Shigella, Staph, Campylobacter, and E. coli (which causes most traveler's diarrhea.) Also parasites and viruses, like Giardia, Crypto, and Norovirus. But these are most always food or water borne. And AFAIK, they're don't colonize anyone's mouth.
