  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hi, I'm new here.

One thing that has often been difficult for me around other Christians is the feeling that I'm in the minority of how I think about things. I filter everything through a rational lens, and it has been my experience that this kind of open questioning is frowned upon in many Christian communities.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Also, I've found this awesome quiz that highlights the personalities of the Disciples: Which Disciple are You?

I'm curious to hear other people's results.

ended up as a John and it's very accurate.

Like John, you are a deeply spiritual and emotional person. You are a keen observer of relationships and personal character, often seeing connections and patterns that others miss. You are an imaginative dreamer with a strong grasp of spiritual matters and the purpose of human existence. You can also be extremely dedicated and loving.

However, like John, you may have a fierce nature. Like a true "Son of Thunder" you may be prone to believing that your spiritual intuition elevates you above others. You may see yourself as morally superior to those less spiritually attuned than you. This a side of yourself you must temper with love and understanding.

I've been working on the latter, I'm a minister with an above average understanding of word for my age so that causes me to sometimes feel low key superior, I don't brag or show off or such but yeah been working on humbling myself when it comes to the way I view other ideals or view what some say who maybe don't have an understanding or just could use help.

Touché, hello and welcome.

me too, i question things a lot too, i have always been way to realistic, i don´t see anything wrong with asking questions, and no question is bad, i think we should challenge each others minds, it´s important!

I took the test, i was Nathanael, i can relate to that, thank you for posting it!!

One enlightening experience for me happened some years ago, when my church youth group took the Myers-Briggs test. It turned out that I was the only INTJ in the group. I had for a long time felt that my personality didn't really fit in with the rest of the group. This helped explain why.

I got Philip!
"Like Philip, you are an inquisitive and analytical person. You are open to exploring new ideas and testing them with the tools of logic and reason. You tackle the "big questions" about life and the universe, and others often look to you for insight.

However, also like Philip, your objective and abstract tendencies may cause you to overlook the things in life that can't be explained with logic. You may have trouble believing that miracles are really possible. Or you may not always realize the importance and power of the loving relationships right in front of you. You may be reluctant to discuss your personal feelings, and this may prevent you from openly bringing others to Christ.

Supposedly....I'm a 'Phillip' according to the quiz. Interesting. I thought I'd be a 'Thomas.'

Anyway, welcome to the Star Wars Cantina for Christian interlopers, Philip248. You'll find all kinds here. And yes, sometimes persons like us are a minority. But, that's ok, within a "reasonable" set of bounds. ;)

Welcome to CF!!

Peace,

Why do you identify with Thomas?
Before the crucifixion, we see Thomas asking questions when he doesn't understand what Jesus is saying. After the resurrection, he demands evidence; he doesn't want to just go along with what may be the wishful thinking of the group. He's no coward -- he says that the disciples should accompany Jesus to Jerusalem to die with him there -- but he wants to believe what's true, even if that's painful. I see Thomas as asking the questions I would want to ask, if I had been there.

That's interesting you say that. I've always felt that Thomas got a bad rap as the only one who questioned. I think they all had questions, just in their own style and way. They asked different things.

For instance, Thomas just wanted to see the wounds, but once he saw them, he believed. He accepted the impossible because it was in front of him. Some others might have concocted other explanations, not trusting what they were seeing.

I guess I think Thomas is unfairly labeled as the only Doubter.

Your role as a disciple of Christ is that of an open-minded and nonjudgmental philosopher. You inspire debate and thought-provoking dialogue that challenges others to "Come and see" what Jesus is all about.

I'm also an intj

Interesting. How did you answer the questions about "order vs. chaos" "taking things as they come vs. planning" and "juggling projects vs. finishing what you start"?

I'd have to take it again to answer for sure but I think I said I work best amongst choas than have all my ducks in a row; I'm not a planner I'm a researcher; and that I juggle projects in allowing them to have a life of their own.

You may see yourself as morally superior to those less spiritually attuned than you. This is a side of yourself you must temper with love and understanding.

Your role as a disciple of Christ is one of a visionary or prophet. You speak the truth as you see it, even if it can't be proven or isn't popular. Others may see you as mystical or possessing a connection with Christ that goes beyond their comprehension. Yet, in your most honest moments, you know that your greatest strength lies not in your love for Christ, but in His love for you.

It is a nice result, although I am not one who sees myself as more superior than others. I do have experienced much in my faith and relationship to Christ which has suprised others as for some reason many I have met thinks lesser of me. I have found this a bit annoying, but I just try not taking it all too personally towards me, and just keep on walking with Christ as my main focus and life-goal. I do believe anyone can experience much in Christ when they have faith, and keep on growing closer to Him, also when reading in His Word and praying, e.t.c... I want to encourage others to continue having faith in God, and to know and believe they will and can be used by Him.

You are not in a minority by any means... most folks will have questions, often times really hard and unanswerable questions. What happens though, is when folks can't resolve it, or perhaps more appropriately come to peace with said question, they file it away deep within and never want to engage with it again. From a spreading the Gospel point of view, this turns out to be counterproductive... as rather than deep engagement with a person exploring Christianity, or maybe someone who is new in Christ, the message comes across that "such questions should not be asked..." Another issue is that such can lead to faith being somewhat superficial, rather than a scaffold one can build upon as one works through discipleship. Lastly, such an approach can result in canned answers... just enough for the teacher to say, yep we got this, where in reality, the complexity is 10x more difficult, or maybe it can't be resolved at all.

Alas, its not an easy nor predictable thing.. in the worst case, some take such questions as an attack on their person, or even an attack on God's word if they co-mingled their interpretation with the actual scriptures.

And as one might expect, I got Philip too! Lol
