replenish

"...to make full or complete again"

Maybe there was an implication of a previous earth..that is a condition where the species had nearly been wiped out and so now the command was to "replenish" the earth..sort of like the scenarios that modern scientists recount.

but the Hebrew male' means "to fill, be full" and is a verb..

I was just reading in Genesis, Genesis 1:28 where God creates Man and Woman and it reads "And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and REPLENISH the Earth..."

What does the replenish part imply? Does my Bible have typos in it or something?
Hi, XC --- no, your Bible doesn't have typos in it.

It means just that --- replenish or refill the earth from Something that was once there.

And Bombila's question is right on the mark ---
That raises a question for me - what or who filled up the earth before, that are gone?
The Holy Spirit ---
Genesis 1:2b said:
And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

XChristians OP seems direct enough to me, given one knows the meaning of 'replenish'. Unless the word/phrase is mistranslated, it implies that the earth was previously full, then was empty, and the command is to fill it up again. That raises a question for me - what or who filled up the earth before, that are gone?

In A Dictionary of Islam Jinn are said to have come the Earth ages before man existed. They were the first of Earth's masters.

i've heard discussion before suggesting there was something inclulding people before eden existed, from a previous passage in genesis before it goes into detail with only adam and eve.

i love hearing the variety of interpretations when it comes to the bible, i personally flip between the complete jewish bible that came from the gentleman who saved me and a tniv study bible from the pastor who baptised me. One was messianic and the other was evangelican.

I find i rather like the name Adonai in reference to the Lord, it sounds less enigmatic.

Nope, my Websters Dictionary clearly states what replenish means and it is not to "fill up, spread out all across".

Sorry Websters was not invented by God back then to shed light on Biblical Exegesis.

In the Baha'i Writings Baha'u'llah revealed there were Prophets before Adam:

And now regarding thy question, "How is it that no records are to be found concerning the Prophets that have preceded Adam, the Father of Mankind, or of the kings that lived in the days of those Prophets?"

Know thou that the absence of any reference to them is no proof that they did not actually exist. That no records concerning them are now available, should be attributed to their extreme remoteness, as well as to the vast changes which the earth hath undergone since their time.
Moreover such forms and modes of writing as are now current amongst men were unknown to the generations that were before Adam.

There was even a time when men were wholly ignorant of the art of writing, and had adopted a system entirely different from the one which they now use. For a proper exposition of this an elaborate explanation would be required.

What does the replenish part imply? Does my Bible have typos in it or something?

Replenish means, in effect, make replete (overflowing, full or abundant). The original meaning of the word does not imply the re-occurence of such repletion, as would be understood today. Because of possible ambiguity, most modern translations would have an alternative word or phrase. This does not mean the original was mistranslated, but rather that words are dynamic, and their meanings can change over time.
