REPENT / REPENTANCE: Just scary words?

Repent / Repentance are a scary words for some. Sometimes they are SCREAMED at them!
They believe that they must:
FIRST: "purify" themselves and
SECOND: "work hard" to make themselves acceptable to a righteous and holy God.

OT:

Number 23:19
“God is not a man, that He should lie,
Nor a son of man, that He should repent;
Has He said, and will He not do it?
Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good?

"that He should repent;" ...Hebrews 5162...nacham...
to be sorry, console oneself, regret, comfort, be comforted

"to repent."...Hebrews 7725...shuwb...to return, turn back

" How does un-believer become a believer?"...the ROLE of "Repent / Repentance"

NT:

Matthew 3:2; 4:17 ; Mark 1:15
“Repent, for the "kingdom of heaven" (God) is at hand.” (Jesus the Divine Messiah has come!...good news!)

"Repent,...Greek 3340...metanoeo..."to change one's mind" /
to change one's mind for the better; heartily to amend with abhorrence one's past sins

Repentance (metanoia= 'change of mind') involves a turning with contrition FROM sin TO God; the "repentant sinner" is in the proper condition/position to ACCEPT the Divine spiritual invitation to SALVATION! God Draws/Calls ALL Mankind to a "free will" spiritual DECISION and CHOICE: ACCEPT! ...OR...REJECT!

SEE: 1 Chronicles 28:9; Deuteronomy 30:19

To Me, "repent" simply means: RE-THINK...spiritually turning TO God when He calls / draws you And turning away FROM self and sin.

Repentance in context has TWO meanings:

1. repent UNTO salvation...God calls/draws you to Him from sinful self...turning to God to ACCEPT THE GIFT!

e.g. Jesus preached:

Mark 1 (NASB)...Jesus Preaches in Galilee
14 Now after John (the Baptizer) had been taken into custody, Jesus came into Galilee,
preaching the gospel (good news) of God, 15 and saying,
“The time is fulfilled, and the "kingdom of God" is at hand (HERE! NOW!);
(Jesus the Divine Messiah had come down from heaven to save Mankind!)
"repent" AND believe in the "gospel".” (Jesus the Divine Messiah had come!)

Luke 24...Jesus: AFTER The Resurrection
47 and that repentance for (because of?) forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed in His name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem.

Romans 2 (NASB)
4 Or do you think lightly of the riches of His kindness and tolerance and patience,
not knowing that the kindness (GRACE!) of God (the Holy Spirit) LEADS you to repentance?

2 Cor. 7:10
For the sorrow that is according to the will of God produces a "repentance without regret",
leading to salvation, but the sorrow of the world (mourning/wailing) produces death.

2 Peter 3:9
The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness,
but is patient toward you, (unbelievers?)
not wishing for ANY to perish
but for ALL to come to repentance.

2 Timothy 2:25
with gentleness correcting those who are in opposition,
if perhaps God may grant them repentance leading to the knowledge of the truth,

2. repent BACK into" fellowship" after sinning...e.g. The Parable of the Prodigal Son

Luke 15 (NASB)...Jesus and the Parable of "The Lost Coin"
10 In the same way, I tell you,
there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”

Repentance for believers involves CONFESSION and claiming cleansing and forgiveness of sins purchased by Jesus' completed work by shedding Divine Blood on the Cross.

1 John 1...God Is Light
5 This is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you, that God is Light,
and in Him there is no darkness at all.
6 If we say that we have FELLOWSHIP with Him and yet walk in the darkness,
we lie and do not PRACTICE the truth;
7 but if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light,
we have FELLOWSHIP with "one another", (BELIEVERS)
and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.
8 If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us.
9 If we confess (AGREE WITH GOD ABOUT) our sins,
He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness
.
10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar and His word is not in us.

QUESTION of the OP: Is "Repent / Repentance" a pre-requisite of:
A: SALVATION of UN-BELIEVERS?
B: Restoration of FELLOWSHIP in your spiritual relationship with God and Man?

RULES:
YOU MUST copy + paste supporting Scripture for EACH point that you discuss.

Hi Ron:
I believe that life is full of repentances that come with learning and growing as we see our past mistakes and learn how to change. It comes with a contrite yearning to draw nearer to God to do His Will and not our own.

Psa 51:1 To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David, when Nathan the prophet came unto him, after he had gone in to Bathsheba. Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions.
Psa 51:2 Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.
Psa 51:3 For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me.
Psa 51:4 Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest.
Psa 51:5 Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.
Psa 51:6 Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom.
Psa 51:7 Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
Psa 51:8 Make me to hear joy and gladness; that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice.
Psa 51:9 Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities.
Psa 51:10 Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.
Psa 51:11 Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me.
Psa 51:12 Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit.
Psa 51:13 Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto thee.
Psa 51:14 Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, thou God of my salvation: and my tongue shall sing aloud of thy righteousness.
Psa 51:15 O Lord, open thou my lips; and my mouth shall shew forth thy praise.
Psa 51:16 For thou desirest not sacrifice; else would I give it: thou delightest not in burnt offering.
Psa 51:17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.
Psa 51:18 Do good in thy good pleasure unto Zion: build thou the walls of Jerusalem.
Psa 51:19 Then shalt thou be pleased with the sacrifices of righteousness, with burnt offering and whole burnt offering: then shall they offer bullocks upon thine altar.

ALSO My favorite: A "call out to God" after re-thinking is:

Psalm 51(NASB)..A Contrite Sinner’s Prayer for Pardon.For the choir director.
A Psalm of David, when Nathan the prophet came to him, after he had gone in to Bathsheba.

1 Be gracious to me, O God, according to Your lovingkindness;
According to the greatness of Your compassion blot out my transgressions.
2
Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity
And cleanse me from my sin.
3
For I know my transgressions,
And my sin is ever before me.
4
Against You, You only, I have sinned
And done what is evil in Your sight,
So that You are justified when You speak
And blameless when You judge.
5
Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity,(sin nature? sinful world?
And in sin my mother conceived me.
6
Behold, You desire truth in the innermost being,
And in the hidden part You will make me know wisdom.
7
Purify me with hyssop, and I shall be clean;
Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
8
Make me to hear joy and gladness,
Let the bones which You have broken rejoice.
9
Hide Your face from my sins
And blot out all my iniquities.

10-13
Create in me a clean heart, O God, And renew a steadfast spirit within me.
Do not cast me away from Your presence And do not take Your (God the) Holy Spirit from me.
Restore to me the joy of Your salvation And sustain me with a willing spirit.
Then I will teach transgressors Your ways, And sinners will be converted to You.

14
Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, the God of my salvation;
Then my tongue will joyfully sing of Your righteousness.
15
O Lord, open my lips,
That my mouth may declare Your praise.
16
For You do not delight in sacrifice, otherwise I would give it;
You are not pleased with burnt offering.
17
The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit;
A broken and a contrite heart, O God, You will not despise.
18
By Your favor do good to Zion;
Build the walls of Jerusalem.
19
Then You will delight in righteous sacrifices,
In burnt offering and whole burnt offering;
Then young bulls will be offered on Your altar.

It seems to me that people are afraid, because they fear that they should abandon their evil acts. And then they are relieved when it is said to them that they can continue to be evil, because Jesus died.

Ron, you know what I find most interesting about this psalm? It says that when they start building the walls of Jerusalem, then God will be pleased with burnt offerings and sacrifices of righteousness. Why? Because these are believers who are doing the will of God. They are the true burnt offerings for whom God is pleased. They have the sufficiency of the Spirit to make for a pleasing offering.

Isa 40:16 And Lebanon is not sufficient to burn, nor the beasts thereof sufficient for a burnt offering.

There is a perfect way of life that was set for example to follow, and was considered the perfect offering, and sinners killed Him. All sinners will continue to repent until their life can be perfected. If we are spiritually growing and learning God's will, we will continue to repent, from our mistakes.

Q1: "...It seems to me that people are afraid, because they fear that they should abandon their evil acts....

Q2: "...And then they are relieved when it is said to them that they can continue to be evil, because Jesus died...."

A1: Mankind is born with:
a. a spirit made in the image of God. (Genesis 2:26?)
b. an innate self-centered selfish "sin nature" (Genesis 6:5; Matthew 15 (Jesus on the "heart of Man")
c. the gift of "free will" to choose or decide: ME or GOD.
1 Chronicles 28:9; Deuteronomy 30:19; John 3:36

Man FEARS that at death, he will be eternally separated from God in the "lake of fire". Revelation chapter 19-21.

A2: BELIEVERS are saved and go through the sanctifiction process because they ACCEPT the FACT of "substitutionary atonement". More God, Less Sin!

UN-BELIEVERS are lost and are dead in their sins because they REJECT the spiritual CALLING/DRAWING of God. At death, they face only a SENTENCING JUDGEMENT.

Hebrews 9:27
And inasmuch as it is appointed for (UNSAVED) men to "die" once and after this comes judgment, (OF THEIR SPIRITS BY GOD).

Hebrews 9:27
And inasmuch as it is appointed for (UNSAVED) men to "die" once and after this comes judgment, (OF THEIR SPIRITS BY GOD).

Those who do not come to the judgment light in their life time will be sorry later:

1Pe 4:12 Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you:
1Pe 4:13 But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ's sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy.
1Pe 4:14 If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you: on their part he is evil spoken of, but on your part he is glorified.
1Pe 4:15 But let none of you suffer as a murderer, or as a thief, or as an evildoer, or as a busybody in other men's matters.
1Pe 4:16 Yet if any man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf.
1Pe 4:17 For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God?
1Pe 4:18 And if the righteous scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear?
1Pe 4:19 Wherefore let them that suffer according to the will of God commit the keeping of their souls to him in well doing, as unto a faithful Creator.

The atonement of Christ is not a substitutional who-do, voo-do, magic act that miraculously cleans you.
The real atonement comes from ones obedience and faith to the Word of LIfe.

1Pe 1:2 Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied.

According to Levi. 1;4, atonement could be obtained by taking hold of the head of the sacrifice, but the truth is that those who take hold of the head of Christ are part of the body, and it can only benefit you by following it (the head). For what body can live that defies the head.

Lev 1:4 And he shall put his hand upon the head of the burnt offering; and it shall be accepted for him to make atonement for him.

Col 2:19 And not holding the Head, from which all the body by joints and bands having nourishment ministered, and knit together, increaseth with the increase of God.

The greatest delusion filling the Christian world is the substitute death of Christ, while everyone just sits back and shouts Hallelujah, ignorance is bliss. What a rude awakening awaits for those who believe that.
