REMOVED: Search for member's posts and threads

Unfortunately, I've had to remove this feature again - it has been causing the server to crash many times today.

We are in the top 20 largest forums in the world with over 7.6 million posts - each time you look for a member's post, the server has to search ALL 7.6 million posts to look and find the posts that a member has made.

You see why the site goes down each time someone tries that?

Unless I find a better way to do this, I don't think I can bring it back, unless I severely reduce the number of posts CF has - deleting like 99% of them, so that the search works faster.

This feature works well in small forums, but in a forum this size, it really causes a lot of trouble and headache! My apologies for any incovenience.

I'm trying to do so. To know which posts were made in the last month, the stupid database still needs to go through all the posts!

ack - sounds like a tough thing to work around in that case - still, if you don't figure out a way to do it, i don't think people are gonna leave because of it i've only been here a few weeks and have quite warmed to the place!

just out of curiosity, how'd you find out who the top 20 are?

Yikes!! I had no idea this feature was such a nightmare! Do you run into the same catch 22 if you specify a forum to search, or are those tucked into separate parts of the database? I know I only use maybe 8-10 of the subforums, so searching more than that to get back to my posts is a waste of resources.

Elanor - you don't have to search to get back to your posts. You can just subscribe, and then you can access all your subscribed threads from your user CP. I just discovered that, so I wanted to point it out. Just ignore me if you already know

Well, now, I hadn't thought of that. Another board I was on notified me every time someone posted in a thread I subscribed to, and I couldn't find a way to turn that feature off. It was so annoying that I completely disregarded the subscribe thread feature here. I'll give it a shot!

And by the way, you don't have to get emails if you don't want to. Subscription can be set to "No email notification" in Options. That's what I do. But you'll find out what you prefer!

It only searches to find the last 500 posts. If you could bring that number down to, say, 50, it wouldn't bog down the server as much. I doubt people post more than 50 times per three or four days and if they do, they need to exercise more!

But then you can end up with a huge list of subscribed threads . . it can be a nightmare too .

Erwin, I understand the problem you are having. But this makes it really hard to keep track of things. It takes away a great deal of this forum's usefulness in my opinion. I am hoping you can find a way around this.

I had no idea that this feature caused so many problems. I think it's one of my favorite features too. Maybe all threads that haven't been replied to in over 30 days that aren't sticky can be deleted to help too?

Hope there's something... if not I'm sure we'll all get by!

It'll be better than not being able to get onto the page at all from the crashes!!!

You can now search for your posts........

At the top of the CF home page is a search window that allows you to search either the web or JUST CF ----- try it!!!

Perhaps you could put old threads (6 months plus or so) in an archive. And perhaps searches could be made to ignore archived threads. Don't know how plausible this is, as I am quite ignorant where web mastering lies... but I thought I'd float the thought.
