  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Remarriage - please explain?"

BTW: That's a rather inclusive statement. There are more than a few Churches and Pastors who WILL NOT marry a person who has been previously divorced, with one sole exception, that the divorced person's spouse is now deceased.

Were you not aware of this?

I disagree that it's inclusive and for the record that wasn't my intent.

So a wife can continue to show up at work with injuries from "falling down the stairs" or "running into a doorknob" as long as her husband remains faithful?

Bible clearly states a couple can separate. If you don't like what the Bible says make up your own rules.

Considering NothingButTheBlood shows a baptist symbol, I wonder if this is the same in the Baptist church as well.

According to Scripture you can separate but not remarry or divorce. That's why pastors do marriage counseling and do not marry someone unless comfortable.

Conclusions and Applications

In the New Testament the question about remarriage after divorce is not determined by:
[...]

  • [...]

Rather it is determined by the fact that:
    [...]

    • [...]

      etc.

      ---------------------------------

    • Not being a Christian myself, I certainly would not presume to argue with one on the question of what a proper scripturally based position on the question of divorce might be.

However, in saying that the correct position on this question is independent of 'whether either spouse is a believer or not,' are you suggesting that everyone, even non-Christians, should advocate a position on this question based on Christian understandings of marriage?

I am not an authority on what the Bible says. I've only read a few books. That's why I ask questions.

Why do Christian Churches remarry people that have been divorced for non-adultering reasons?
Probably because Christian Churches (and most Christians)would not exist today if they actually held to a literalist view on everything in the bible.

I know quite a few too..but I also know quite a few who couldn't get an annulment. Contrary to popular belief, it's not about money. Not even Jackie O, with her seemingly unlimited resources, was able to swing an annulment. Canon law is really rather strict- although couples can, and do, fudge the truth.

It's actually a common practice for Catholic, European royalty and aristocrats to write letters to friends before the wedding expressing that they are not really committed to this marriage, blah blah blah, so that if the marrieage fails, they can present these letters to the Church as proof that no "true marriage" ever existed so that the marriage can be anulled, which is a declaration that a true marriage did not exist. Therefore, the person is free to marry in the Church again, and any children from that marriage will be legitimate and can inheirit the family titles. They don't request anullment after a child has been born, because that child would be a *******, as the there was no true marriage of the mother and father, and therefore couldn't inhierit the familiy title as the first born. This actually affects a lot of enthroned and deposed royalty and aristocrats as everything south of the Alps is Catholic, and even though many of the royal and aristocratic families don't rule, their titles and social positions in Europe are still important.

Interesting that not many of the anti-homosexual rights crowd have weighed in on this topic. You see no advocation from them that remarriage should be made illegal.

How is homosexuality different?
Both a homosexual life style and remarriage involve continuous sin.
If your arguement is that homosexuality is trying to be normalized then the same can be said about divorce with it's increasing rates.

Perhaps I'm not the best person to answer, since I'm not Christian, but I think the church has simply caved in to popular opinion. Jesus' teachings on the matter were about as unambiguous as biblical teachings get. American society doesn't find that teaching particularly convenient, and the church has sided with the public.

The Catholic Church, however, has remained true to their principles as far as this matter is concerned.

The Church has caved in to popular opinion.

However, Jesus was not ambiguous. He said that if a man divorces his wife for any reason besides lewd conduct then he has committed adultery.

If divorce and remarriage is a sin it's just another sin on a long list of sins that each person deals with on a daily basis. What's funny is watching people create a hierachry of sin that always, ALWAYS, places whatever they personally don't deal with on the top, and their own on the bottom. Christianity is no different than anything else in that regard.

Actually a number of conservatives are advocating for the restriction of access to divorce and more extensive pre-cana (pre-marriage) counseling and education. Divorce is far too common among Christians and non-Christians. There are Christians who are addressing this. I agree that it should be confronted stridently. It's prevalence is no justification for pro-gay marriage laws

Thank you for that very sweeping judgement of all people. Actually, this irritates me. How do you know that EVERYONE ALWAYS does this? Your rationale is about as accurate as saying obeisity is unhealthy, people want to be healthy, therefore Rosie O'Donnel is a super-model. It says that all murderers think that parking illegally is worse than what they have done so long as they have not parked illegally.

Obesity is unhealthy, have you heard of the term 'morbidly obese'.

Maybe you meant something along the lines of; it is as rational as allowing some people to be remarried but preventing others from being able to marry in the first place.

EVERYONE ALWAYS does this because when people are judging the sins of others and make a hierarchy of sins(the point of my original post) they are NOT judging themselves or placing their own sins on top. I suppose there may be the odd person or two out there who would consider count themselves among the guilty when suggesting others are living in sin, but not enough for me to count. Sorry you got irritated though.

BTW when did obesity become healthy?

Very good observation. I've been waiting for their answers to the questions you pose, but sadly.....they are too busy in the homosexual threads it seems.

I'm with you on this all the way. The hypocrisy of it all makes me want to vomit.

Everyone makes mistakes and if theer is such a thing as forgiveness in the eyes of God then I don't understand why it's adultery to get divorced and remarried?

Which is probably why people are allowed to and do go through divorce and remarriage in churches.

This is another thing that I find ridiculous in the bible.
