  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Does raw pork have more worms than raw beef, or is that just a scare tactic people use?

If this thread needs moved, you can move it. This is a big forum with a lot of boards and it can be confusing sometimes.
Raw pork often has different worms than raw beef.

Most warnings about pork came about because they commonly carried worms that produced trichinosis, because pigs will eat infected meat. Trichinosis worms not only infest the digestive tract, but burrow into the body and form cysts in the muscle tissue, which can't really be treated.

("Mad cow disease" is caused by another agent, and is not killed by cooking. If the meat is contaminated, it is dangerous, no matter how it is handled.)

In the US, pork is rigorously inspected for parasites, nontheless, I would not eat it raw. So yeah, it's a scare tactic. All animals potentially have parasites.

Kreutzfeldt-Jacob (Mad Cow) in beef is not killed by heat. It isn't even technically alive.

We live close to a couple of farms...the one that we notice(by smell) the most is the pig farm...my husband eats pork, I don't.

Nearly all pigs raised in the U.S. come from (CAFO) Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations...you will know one instantly because these pig farms can be smelled from miles away.
It's what you don't know/or hear about...diseases like PRRS(porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome), Nipah Virus, PERV(Porcine Endogenous Retro Virus) information from the CDC, WHJ, Lancet journal and Vetmed.

I tend to believe that pigs carry more viruses...I haven't found anything about
raw pork having more worms than raw beef...but it ain't just the worms to be concerned about there's viruses... and you need to follow the safety handling and cooking guide concerning raw meat and raw pork.

Mad Cow disease is carried in the spinal cord. I was a butcher for many years, and we had a tool that would remove the spinal cord from a loin before we cut it. We only had to do this with a beef loin (T-Bone/Porterhouse) by law...not required for pork. This is part of why it's important to wash any bone in steaks you may get, to insure there's no residue from the spinal cord left on the meat. Plus there's all the gritty bone dust...

As for other issues like worms, bacteria, etc...with the way beef and pork are processed now it's not nearly the issue it was in the past. I wouldn't recommend eating pork rare, but medium is perfectly fine.
