Well one thing is I don't know how he would ask me and if I heard a voice telling me to do something evil I would think it was evil no matter who it claimed to be.
I have a feeling he doesn't realize we're not to follow those "visitations" anymore?

It's basic doctrine.

Hebrews 1:1 God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets,
2 Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;

So you've never heard of someone asking God for some advice and then being absolutely convinced that He had given it? You've never heard of someone declaring with absolute conviction that they are 'doing God's will'? How many examples would you like me to give you?
Why are you bringing Hitler into this?

And if God gives it to you in writing, how does that make it any different?

Might come in handy for his court case.

'Why did you massacre the family?'
'I was given these orders. Exhibit A'.
'This is a message written in crayon on the back of a cornflakes box. And you say it's from God?'
'Would you know if it wasn't?'
'Fair enough. Case dismissed'.

It would be funny. Except it isn't.

And it'd better be in Jacobean English too!

And a corn flakes box?

What happened to milk cartons that academia suggest we pray to?

Well, you might not actually obey God's command even if you honestly think He's given you one. But many people do.

And actually, I think you would anyway. If he told you to spend time administering to the sick, then why wouldn't you (and I'll bet you wouldn't need it in writing)? But if you thought it was 'kill the unbelievers' then despite God being unable to command evil, you'd baulk at it. But many people don't.

We are to convert, not kill, unbelievers.

It's called The Great Commission.

And I'm not Shoko Asahara.

I've heard a lot of things I'm skeptical of. I only know for sure my own experience

We are to convert, not kill, unbelievers.

And that works fine. Until you think you've received a command from God. I can give you examples all day if you like: God told me to kill boys, says mother

'A Texas woman who stoned two of her children to death and seriously injured a third on Mother's Day last year told psychiatrists she was driven to kill by a message from God and that she was sure they would rise again from the dead.'

How could she possibly follow through on that? Well, I guess she thought that God couldn't command her to do evil. So it must have been the right thing to do.

And if you haven't been following the thread (and you really haven't), that's the point that's being made.

Kill all the infidels sounds like something another god would say but I know what your response will be

Let me try this hypothetical. You have a widowed mother who is seriously ill. You pray for guidance as to what the best course of action might be. As I'm sure you would. Even those who say that they don't believe might sometimes ask for spiritual guidance. And you feel that you have been commanded to make financial and personal sacrifices to help your mother for as long as she needs it. So you follow that command. Who wouldn't? Because you personally feel it's the right thing to do. God has helped you.

But maybe you think He has told you to end her suffering. To send her to God right now. In which case...well, what do you do then? Ignore His command? I'd bet you would. Simply because you disagree with it. But would everyone? I'd bet they wouldn't.

Would they have actually received instructions from God to kill her? No. But if they believe that they had, just like that Texas woman, then they'll feel justified in doing it.

If the response is 'It's the same God' then you'd be right. But it's not just infidels.

Yes there are mentally ill people who may actually believe what they're saying I've met some that were almost that bad

When I do, do you want me to check with you first?Really?

Is this the best example you can come up with?

That's kid stuff -- (no pun intended) -- compared to the example I gave in Posts 962 and 966.

That you choose to make light of a mother killing her children is noted.

So is your choice of ignoring bona fide examples of what it is you're harping about.

Examples are legion. Which kinda proves the point being made.

Well in my league, we are to convert -- not kill -- unbelievers.

That's not dismissing the point being put forward. It's accepting it on the basis that 'it doesn't apply to all of us'. Which is not a position I will concede because it wasn't an argument that I have made.

Considering how Paul himself became a Christian, such an admonishment against visions is ironic at least, and hypocritical at most.
