The only exception is a program in which the military allows you to go to school full time but you must serve 1-2 years for every year of school the military pays for in addition to your initial service commitment, I would hardly call that a deal.

If you liked the military profession then whether it was a "deal" or not wouldn't come into the equation.

Bottom line is if you have a fear of conflict or fear changes in national policies then seek other venues for your education.

The original discussion was about someone being drafted out of a civilian school, if they are trying to conscript they are probably not going to let you enter into that program within the military so you will just be getting hosed period.

I wasn't responding to the original discussion, just your comment however, you may be right. You might not be allowed to enter that program under a draft. The needs of the country or service outweigh the wants of the individual.

I think that would be really silly to have to serve in the military to be able to vote. Who do you think builds the machinery that the military uses .... civilian contractors, so should the people that enable to military to do its job not be able to vote or do we just have all the handicap people build tanks and fighter jets. Thats the most nonsence I have heard in a while.

Also just because someone is not willing to be part of a military does not mean they are not willing to fight for there home land, just because you are trained to fight doesnt mean you always should.

Civilian contractors especially should be veterans. they would build less junk if they actually had to use it themselves. take the M-16 for example. that misbegotten piece of junk should never have gotten approved for jungle warfare, as it is about as ill suited a weapon as ever has been made for such a purpose, and I shudder to think how jam-happy it is in the desert. we could have had an upgrade of the AK-47, but NOOOO! Politicians would never approve of anything that looked like a Commie gun no matter how reliable it is, so they give fat contracts to big corporations to design an alternative that works like crap, costs twice as much, has inferior ammunition, but hey, at least it doesn't look communist, right? WWI had the prime example of this with the Chauchat machine gun. Here was a machine gun designed by an committee, contracted to a bicycle company, tested in a laboratory by civilians, and then rubber-stamped into approval and issued to the army without any field-testing whatsoever. The result; a machine gun than jammed at the mere mention of dirt, being used in the trenches. Nice job, civilain contractors!

it's a sobering thought for any serviceman, to know his equipment was built by the lowest bidder.

Amen to that. My friend's m-16 jammed 6 times while qualifying. He sure doesn't trust that thing.

you may qual with the m-16 but most units are being issued m-4's on deployment...

anyhow...I agree the 16 is a definite (nearly) worthless hunk of junk

I've taken an M-16 to the desert. Keep your weapon clean, PMCS it regularly, and it won't jam.

If you refuse to fight, then either your battle buddy will find some way to FORCE you to fight, or you'll be thrown into Leavenworth... and you don't wanna go there.
