  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I'm a member of a Sovereign Grace Ministries church. We are "Essentially Reformed with a significant charismatic dimension".

From the website:

What do you mean by "essentially Reformed"?

A helpful way to summarize it is that we hold to a Reformed soteriology (the doctrine of salvation). We believe that God is sovereign over all things, including the salvation of individual sinners, and that all things, including salvation, have as their ultimate goal the glory of God. Such a perspective keeps the gospel central and grace amazing.

We do believe and cherish the doctrines that historically have been called the "TULIP" (Total depravity; Unconditional election; Limited atonement or, more accurately phrased, particular redemption; Irresistible grace or, more accurately phrased, effectual calling; and Perseverance of the saints). However, we never want to focus on more narrow aspects of Reformed theology to the neglect of truths that are central, and that we share with many other Christians. These truths include the gospel, sola fide (justification by faith alone), and sola Scriptura (Scripture alone as the sole infallible source of doctrine and authority).

While we believe these components of the Reformed perspective faithfully represent the teaching of Scripture, our ultimate theological commitment is not to a particular system of theology, but to theology that is Biblical. We have no other boast but the cross of Christ.

The word "essentially" also refers to a few aspects of doctrine and practice that are common to many Reformed traditions but to which we do not hold. These include infant baptism, cessationism (the belief that some "miraculous" spiritual gifts have ceased), and some traditionally Reformed types of church government.

How Reformed are you? What Reformed Catechism and Confession do you hold to?
Gospel Standard:

Do you hold to the Current Gospel Standard Articles of faith as originally established under Philpot's tenure as the Editor of their publication?

Though the Doctrines of Grace hold me strongly I do not consider myself as Reformed. I hold to no confessions. I highly respect the Reformers and read them but disagree with them in many things. Though I am a Baptist I am not Reformed Baptist. I guess you could say that I am closer to men such as Gill and Huntington though I sometimes disagree with them also. My favorite commentator is Hawker who was an Anglican. I really don't fit into any mold.

I do not currently attend a Reformed church, but I have gone through and make use of both the Westminster Standards and the 3FU, as well as the LBCF. Also, I have greatly benefited from and would recommend the Second Helvetic Confession, which I discovered while looking into the Hungarian Reformed church in my neighborhood. When I was still in my credo days I used Keach's catechism. I am currently working through the Heidelberg Catechism.

I am a member of Presbyterian Church in America that PCA's "Reformed" defines the doctrinal beliefs holds that the purest expressions of scriptural doctrine are found in the Calvinistic creeds, particularly the Westminster Confession of Faith. There is a term called "PRESBYTERIAN CREEDS" which lists various creeds that we follow:
Nicene Creed
The Apostles' Creed
The Scots Confession
The Heidelberg Catechism
The Second Helvetic Confession
The Westminster Confession of Faith
The Westminster Catechisms
The Theological Declaration of Barmen,
The Confession of 1967, and "A Brief Statement of Faith".

The PCA Historical Center show the historical happenings within the PCA history and clarify what PCA actually believe in detail in a section called "Position Papers & Studies".

I would say that in general or on the whole yes (although there are areas that I would deviate slightly from what they teach) however I do not belong to the Gospel Standard Baptists.

How Reformed are you? What Reformed Catechism and Confession do you hold to?

I've only been 'Reformed' for a few years. My church is not Reformed, and I don't know that there is any particular Confession or Catechism I could say I 'hold to' at this time. I'm most familiar with the Westminster Confession and Shorter Catechism, but I think it's mainly beacuse I have found more materials relating to those. I've always been credo-baptist, but since learning more about covenant theology through Michael Horton over the last year or so, I've become more open to paedo-baptism...but I'm not converted there yet!

wouldn't really say i hold to any reformed confessions or catechisms per se.
i do hold to the apostles, nicene, and athanasian creeds; definition of chalcedon & anathemas of constantinople.
and i substantially agree with the scots confession & 39 articles of faith; westminster shorter catechism
