We've had bell choirs before. I think the pastor that was hosting the joint service bit off more than he could chew. I got two of my pieces of music five minutes before the service started.
I use to play in the bell choir at church. While it gave me the least control of any instrument I've ever played, it gave me the greatest pleasure, even more than playing the saxophone.

This response makes me feel old...really, really old.

Me, too, and I'm only a couple of years older than Tofferer!

Then again, my mom always told me I had an "old soul". ^_^

I've heard that name before, but I am otherwise clueless. I will look it up on wikipedia when I have time, possibly after work tonight.

You'll know who he is when you see him....I think. I'm close to your age and I'm pretty fond of Bob Dylan. I'm sure you have heard his music....like "Knockin' on Heaven's Door"...one of his most well known. But if you play harmonica, you'll like his music I think.

I went to an ELCA reformation sunday service today!

We had a nice Reformation Sunday service.

Brass quartet backed up the choir; red was the color of the day, and most of us congregants even remembered to wear red too.

We said the Nicene Creed instead of the Apostles' Creed, and we sang the Lord's Prayer instead of reciting it.

We also presented Bibles to all the 6th-8th grade youth.

I chanted the DS3 liturgy here on Sunday. First time it's been done here in a long time. And the first time I've been able to chant the liturgy since March!!
We blessed and first used the LSB here as well. One of the confirmation kids came up to me after the service and said "This is great!!" Who says that the youth aren't into the liturgy.

Yep. But then, our Confirmands are Confirmed on Pentecost so...*G*

It used to not be so in my congregation though. I was confirmed on Palm Sunday (without communion!!!) and took my First Communion on Maundy Thursday.

Then for a time, the kids were being confirmed on Pentecost but communed on Maunday Thursday. Oy. Our current Pastor moved everything to Pentecost.

Kae

Thank you for sharing this, Kae. Most of our confirmation services take place on those "green" summer Sundays due to the popularity of our "confirmation summer camps." I was confirmed on Midsummer's Day/St. John's, which back then (waaay back then ;)) was the most popular day for church weddings and confirmations. Times have changed and these days people actually get annoyed if someone dares to interrupt their long Midsummer weekend with an invation to a wedding or a confirmation service. :sigh:

I wonder if 10/31/1517 occured during the week of Pentecost 22, which could be why your church celebrates Reformation Day on Pentecost 22 instead of the Sunday closest to 10/31. That would also put a little more time and emphasis on All Saint's Day except on those occasions when 10/31 is also the 22nd Sunday after Pentecost as it was in 2004.

Now that you explained it, yes, yes, that's it. :)

And a small correction. I checked with my pastor and seems like I got the All Saints' liturgical colors upside down: if we use WHITE, we use it earlier in the day and RED toward the evening.

And a casual observation if you don't mind. Looks like you NA guys place more emphasis on the Reformation Day than we do here in the "Old World". No orchestras and brass bands for us. :) Just "A Mighty Fortress is Our God" and Psalm 46 and the like. North America is such a patchwork of denominations that I wonder if there's perhaps more need to underline the importance of Luther and the reformation for our faith than here in our hood where Lutheranism has always had the "monopoly", if you like.

Most of the Reformation services are much like every Sunday. Some churches do add more music and in some areas, several churches will go together for a service.

The church I belonged to growing up always went full-tilt for reformation.

I think you hit the nail on the head here. Lutherans are among a number of denominations here, and we seem to be losing our identity, especially with such programs as Ablaze where the denominational lines are blurred more and more. Some congregations wish to emphasize their Lutheran heritage and identity and Reformation Sunday seems to be the fitting time to do so.

In one congregation I attended (now ELCA), we had an assistant who did the singing and chanting for the pastor. Pastor couldn't sing to save his life. This individual would be called a Cantor by the Jewish. I don't remember what his title was, however, it was one of the most beautiful types of services I've ever attended.
