In one congregation I attended (now ELCA), we had an assistant who did the singing and chanting for the pastor. Pastor couldn't sing to save his life. This individual would be called a Cantor by the Jewish. I don't remember what his title was, however, it was one of the most beautiful types of services I've ever attended.

I was a cantor in my home congregation before I went to sem. Our pastor there couldn't carry a tune in a paper sack, and he'd be the first one to tell ya that.
