PG: we don't seem to go in for holidays as such. Most of ours we inherited from the Brits so really there's only Australia Day (Jan 26th) when we became a penal colony of Britain & ANZAC day (April 25th) when we celebrated being massacred by the Turks in WW 1.

So ya have a holiday when you became a penal colony--an island prison. And one for getting massacred in a war.

No wonder most aussies seem to have a rowdy air about them!

Yeah, I know. We seem to have a bizarre sense of humour. Australia Day's a bit of a standing joke & Anzac Day is just an excuse for getting drunk; well not quite but sometimes it can seem like that. I know when I post on CF sometimes only another Aussie will get the joke on the side. You yanks are terribly serious sometimes. Must be that Puritan past.

Oh, and see, many of us not from the "North" take offense at being called "Yanks". Yankees are those northern agressors and their prodigy

Most sincere apologies - & I don't find American T.V funny. I know they can the laughter but do people really laugh at this stuff? The exception is MASH. That's hysterical, probably for all the wrong reasons, but what we get as American comedy out here leaves me scratching my head - but then I've already said I like Wilde, who began life as a playwright & was one of the greatest Wits of his age, so you could say I prefer word cleverness in my humour. Seinfeld, Frasier - I just don't get why people find that funny. They strike me as terribly sad & unfulfilled. I dunno...What do you find funny?

Bob Hope and Johnny Carson and Bob Newhart and Steven Wright would be my favorites. Monty Python can be ok but I generally don't go for English humour.

Yeah, a lot of american sitcom humor has much to do with insults and cynical smart remarks. One of the reasons I cut the cable and don't watch TV anymore.

Speaking of Frasier for the longest time our corporate VP and chief financial officer were just a match for the Crane brothers. They even acted goofy like those two at times-it was fun to watch.

I only caught Frasier in reruns but yeah, it had its funny moments. At least there is wasn't so much put down/run down sorta plots like "Everyone Loves Raymond" or "Becker".

I'll tell ya, the funniest show (that actually carried some good messages and didn't always end on a happy note) I was watching when I cut cable was Scrubs. Guys at work said that I reminded them of Dr. Cox--he and I apparently have similar personalities:o but I'm trying to be better.

Hm... I happen to like British humour. I only know Bob Hope of the people you mentioned & him I don't find funny. Things like To the Manor Born will have me in stitches or Dad's Army but not Monty Python so much. Mind you I think House has his moments, but I did warn you my humour tends to be of the rather black variety.

My folks have a DVD set of several hours worth. It makes for a fun weekend. I'm not sure if I saw that. One of my favorites is the one where he goes to the car in his pj's and he's changing into his suit and loafers and shaving and combing his hair and brushing his teeth on the way to his appt. LOL!

You know, repairman and other like service folks really frustrate me. You make an appointment with them for a scheduled time and they are either too early, too late or they don't show up at all. I find that to be SO disrespectful!

I'm beginning to consider those do it yourself books. And I don't think my landlord would want that. I may threaten him with it, though. *Chuckle*

You wouldn't believe what I've learnt about repairing washing machines! Or what we've done to cars over the years. Do it yourself is a way of life on this island.
