To be told what happened to my ancestors was mostly a myth or hogwash is a personal insult to me, but more than that, it is to my people, to my elders, and to my ancestors. It not only shows the true ignorance of the person who said it, it also speaks volumes about the character and the heart of the person who said it. I won't mention the name of this person, because to give this person credit for their derogatory comments is to give them power that they don't deserve. I refuse to give power to their words or allow their words to have power over me. Their words are meaningless if I give them no meaning in my life. I only mention it now to validate my strengthened resolve to continue on in my fight to stand strong for my people and to help me remember who I am and to be proud of who I am. I will continue to stand strong and honor my people, my elders, and my ancestors, no matter the obstacles or opposition placed in my path. I will journey on.

The following was posted on the S.P.I.R.I.T. Society to Protect Indigenous Rights & Indigenous Treaties page on Facebook.

America’s bloodiest day (since the Civil War) that no one talks about. Missing from the advanced US history curricula are the full stories of Native American oppression in the US. Those attitudes of apathy persist today, from a football team’s refusal to change its name to the police shootings of Native Americans that gain barely any media attention, compared to the shootings of black men in the last year.

The pattern of American oppression of Native Americans began with the millions killed when Europeans colonized the Americas, continued with state-sanctioned displacement, and stretched into the wars against American Indians throughout the 1800s. Before, during, and after the Civil War—Americans were still oppressing, marginalizing, stealing land from, and killing Native Americans. The last of those massacres was in 1890, at Wounded Knee in South Dakota, when at least 200 Lakota people were killed.

"For me writing has become prayers that say, `Great Spirit, return to us our freedom, our land, and our lives. We are thankful for the present from which we learn how to be thankful for the past, and how to be hopeful for the future." -- Barney Bush, SHAWNEE

We Native people have really been tested. This testing is having our land taken from us, our culture challenged, and our way of living altered. Gratefully, we have not lost our spirituality. Our spirituality has been the key for our people making it through all of these tests. Our prayers are strong. Indian people have also been able to adjust to change and still keep their culture and spirituality. Today, we should be grateful to the Creator for the present and for the lessons of the past. May our future be guided by the Great Spirit.

Great Spirit, thank You for Mother Earth and Father Sky. Thank You for my life.

Native Lives Matter Report

In light of the debate surrounding police violence against minority populations in the United States, one group that is consistently affected, yet continuously excluded from broad public discourse, is Native Americans. Much of the rhetoric has been justifiably dedicated to African Americans in urban areas, who certainly suffer from disproportionate criminal justice outcomes.

Question: Should a person be held liable and possibly lose their employment for posting racist and/or derogatory comments about other people, such as fellow co-workers, on Facebook or any other social media website? Yes or no? Please explain your answer. I look forward to the discussion and to your responses.

Please remember to speak in a civil, respectful manner to each other. This is not a debate. It is a discussion.

If there is someone who is not an original member of our Talking Circle and they would like to participate in this particular discussion, then I must ask that they please refrain from being argumentative and disrespectful of other people's opinions within this discussion. As the site rule on Flaming cites, please refrain from insulting, inflammatory, or goading remarks. Any such posts will be immediately reported to a site administrator.

I think that doing so on a site like Facebook is not really different from someone overhearing you say it to a friend in public, except that it's more easily provable.

Should such an incident cause actual conflict in the workplace, then I would say a boss is justified in firing someone because, ultimately, the boss is responsible for the productivity and environment in the workplace.

I agree with what you have said. That is my position as well.

Providing there is no contract protecting the employee and they live in an at-will state, you can be fired for anything you say that doesn't relate directly to a protected class. For example, it would be illegal to fire you if you told me that you were a Native American but I could fire you if you told me that I was responsible for the treatment of your people.
