• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

My boy friend told me that he has rectal bleeding and its been going on for a couple of years now for him. The bleeding has increased over the years. He just now recently got it checked into though. He didn't have any health insurance or anything a couple of years ago thats why he had to wait up until now. So, far he said it's not hemorrhoids, but could have something to do with his Colin and he might get a test done on that for the Colin, whatever the Colin test is called, but he's already gotten some other tests done that he's waiting on. He said he does not know if he could have a really bad disease or what. He said he wasn't sure when I asked him if it might turn out bad. Anyway, I posted this to ask what do you think could be wrong with him? Do you think it'll end up being something really bad? I mean if someone has rectal bleeding it never means anything good and its probably most likely something deadly? Or most of the time anyway? What do you think? Do all rectal bleeding problems end up turning into deadly diseases or what kind of diseases could this turn out to be? Please someone help me and if my my boy friend ends up dying from this. I'm gonna be a terrible mess. I just love him so much and I totally feel like he's so perfect for me. No one has ever treated me as well as he does...Maybe its just not meant for us to be together though is it? Now, I'm about to cry:cry:

Please everyone also pray for him that it does not turn out to be anything too serious. I'm really needing someone to help comfort me right now too:cry:

It could be crohn's or colitis. Both can require several tests (colonoscopy, endoscopy, camera, bloodwork, etc). He needs to be seen by a doctor.

In the meantime, ask him about his diet. A typical diet for someone with crohn's during a flareup would be bananas, applesauce, canned peaches. Start with that and add other foods like oatmeal, salad, etc. I know of someone with crohn's who lived on salads for months before getting the correct diagnosis to begin medication.

Crohn's/colitis/other autoimmune disorders are not the end of the world. Just a transition to a 'different' life. A new normal. God is still on the throne and eternity can't compare with our brief existence on earth.

Perhaps the worst diagnosis would be cancer. I have a child in remission and I recently lost my best friend to pancreatic cancer. As hard as it is, Rom 8:28 assures us that we must trust God. Please pray and trust Him. In the meantime I hope your boyfriend sees a doctor. Please urge him to do so!

I am sorry for your situation, Jessica. I am not a doctor, and I do not really think it would be helpful for me to try to tell you what might or might not be the problem. No doubt there are benign causes of such bleeding, as well as more serious causes. The main thing is that your boyfriend has now seen a doctor, and his problem is being investigated; the word is colon, by the way. The digestive tract leads from the stomach to the small intestine, and then to the large intestine or colon; from what you have said the doctors think the problem is in the colon.

Rectal bleeding is not something to ignore, because it can indicate serious disease; I think you already know this. I am afraid the first most common cause has already been ruled out, so you have to wait for the test results. But you can't turn the clock back; you have to deal with what you have to deal with today, as best you can. I hope your prayers are answered, and this turns out to be something less serious. God is good.

Yes, everyone. He already went and seen some doctors about it not too long after I posted this. He is going to get a colonoscopy soon. I'm scared. I sure hope it turns out well or at least for it to be something curable and not cancer.

It's very scary but if you can, try not to dwell on the negative - there can be many other reasons for this than cancer. Sometimes they never actually find the reason for rectal bleeding and also out of all the people who go for colonoscopy with this problem, not so many are found to have cancer. Praying that in this case it is something benign.

Well his regular doctor checked him out first and done some other kind of tests on him, but didn't find anything. So thats when he went to a gastrologist, the one that will give him the colonoscopy. Still after a while when he got checked by his regular doctor he started noticing black, tarry stool and you know that could be cancer? It just started doing that the other week just recently a couple of days after, but hopefully they're catching it in time. I'm so afraid. They'll be doing the colonoscopy soon.

I'm so sorry you are going through this Jessica. I know from personal experience how scary a time this is. Even with black tarry stools though, it can be due to an ulcer or something. Doesn't have to be cancer although I know it can be a symptom of cancer as well. The good news is that colon cancer is one of the ones that is easiest to cure. I know it is just so so scary, but hang on in there and know that people will be praying for you and your boyfriend. Let us know how it goes.

Yeah, assuming he is around your age, it is more likely to be something like Crohn's or inflammatory bowel disease. Hope it all works out

He's 26 years old.

Why do you say colon cancer is easiest to cure? If its cancer then of course its going to be very hard to cure. I don't know why you would say that.

Jessica, some cancers are harder to cure than others. Colon cancer is the one that has a good rate of cure. I know this from experience and also from what is said by the medical profession. If you felt up to it, you could look this up on google and you could then see that if caught early, there is every chance of a cure.

I don't want to go into detail as this is probably not the place for it, but your boyfriend is young, and that gives him a good chance - if indeed it is cancer (which it might not be). Some cancers are harder to cure than others, and some need more treatment than others. Whilst it is not a nice thing to deal with, if indeed it has happened to your boyfriend, there is every chance that he will come through this and be absolutely fine. I know many people who have been cured of colon cancer.

I am afraid of saying something that might upset you Jessica, as I sense that you are very fragile right now (understandably so) and I too have gone through this fragility and fear. So I know some of what you are going through. I too have had this fear.

Do you know yet when the colonoscopy is going to be? I wish you both well on that day, and with the result too, whatever it is.

Jessica, I just re-read your first post in this thread and honestly, my heart goes out to you. I can relate so well to what you are going through. I don't know what to say to comfort you, but I so want to be able to say something that would. I so know this fear.

None of know whether this is something really bad or not - we can only give you the things that we know. We are not doctors, and once the colonoscopy is done, you will know exactly what is what. All I can say is that this does not have to be something deadly and there are other things that it can be. And even if it does turn out to be something not nice, it may well be dealable with. My sister's boyfriend had colon cancer - same scenario as your boyfriend. He went through surgery, then chemotherapy, and now he is cured. He is absolutely fine. He was about the same age as your boyfriend. i don't know if this helps or not Jessica as I don't want to say something that is upsetting to you. I don't know if you have heard of Lynn Faulds Wood or not but she was cured of it, as was Sharon Osbourne. There are many others.

I wish I could come put an arm around you Jessica because I feel your fear. Hang on in there - please let us know how it all goes. And always remember - there are other conditions that this can be. Let us pray that this is the case.

Sometimes colonoscopies don't tell you either. My close friend had to essentially treat himself by diet until properly diagnosed. Neither a colonoscopy, endoscopy, or x-rays showed any problem. And he was sure it was cancer for quite a while. The good news is that the meds today allow a near-normal diet. And if he had to go off meds he could do it by structuring his diet. You and your boyfriend are in my prayers.

Pray. Trust God.

He gets the colonoscopy done tomorrow on Thursday.

Oh, and if he hasn't done the colonscopy yet. I recommend juice fasting the day before he does the prep. My friend started the prep after eating a big lunch. Not a very bright idea although we laugh about it now.

Yes, he said he was going to start a liquid diet today.

All they found out is that he has a stomach infection. I think hopefully that will be something curable. At least its not cancer. He will get some more results in two weeks.
