  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I'm looking to learn Biblical Hebrew. I don't have the time to take a class so I was wondering if anyone can recommend a good textbook. I'm a pretty good linguist already so I don't need anything that is going hold my hand through grammatical etymology. In fact, that would probably annoying. So something aimed at a beginner who has already studied a couple of other languages is what I'm looking for.

Anyone have suggestions?

I'd recommend Basics of Biblical Hebrew by Pratico (Zondervan, 2001). IMO its the one most geared toward self-study. The book also has a website: http://www.basicsofbiblicalhebrew.com/

Other possibilities include A Grammar for Biblical Hebrew by Seow (Abingdon, revised edition 1995). The exercises in almost every chapter of this book are taken entirely from the (Hebrew) Scripture.

A Modern Grammar for Classical Hebrew by Garrett (Broadman and Holman, 2002). The additions in this book are information on literary genre and textual criticism. Both Seow and Garrett provide not just simply individual verses but passages for the student to interpret, usually one passage per chapter.

Introducing Biblical Hebrew by Ross (Baker 2001). In the last chapters of the book, it shows how to use the BHS (Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia) critical apparatus.

A Practical Grammar for Classical Hebrew by Jacob Weingreen. This book is popular among groups of self-study in Classical Hebrew on the internet.
