How can Christians determine if a doctrine is false?

With the many different viewpoints on this forum, it is obvious they cannot all be correct.

How can we identify which views are not correct, in an effort to get back to what was taught by Christ and His Apostles?

The number one key is that it takes the focus off of Christ in any way.

Feel free to post what you believe is a false doctrine and then explain how it takes the focus off of Christ.

Please keep the discussion "civil" without the name-calling.

It is OK to disagree, but lets try to act like Jesus is watching, because He is...

(Please ignore the tag, unless you are a Full-Preterist.)

I believe that there are too many variables at work here that may be part of the problem.
A short list of examples would be -1- Too many bible versions having different meanings with some even paraphrasing.
2-Language barrier. The English language is the only language in the world that uses chapter divisions and punctuation marks which can cause problems and already has.
3-The bible is a middle eastern jewish book which can cause difficulties to the western mind set when trying to comprehend certain things.
4-Then of coarse there is basic disbelieving , Jesus said "this generation will not pass" and the apostles followed suit with , soon , near , at hand , any moment now , look out!!. So if you are a futurist then like me you are a disbeliever too....lol

It was not the intention of God, to give His prophets a clear, instantly understandable message. To have done that would have revealed His plans to all and sundry.
We can never fully ascertain God’s ultimate design for His creation, although it is clear that he does want those who believe in Him and trust to His salvation, to be aware of coming events. We are told to trust Him and hold fast to our faith, but to do that in the midst of sudden and shocking events, without some idea of the outcome of such events, and then it is so much more difficult for us.

Therefore, because God HAS given us the information we need to know about the future, then it is a serious error to ignore it, to fail to gain some understanding or to think that a rapture removal to heaven will take us away from it all.

It must be obvious, to anyone who reads the news, that the current world situation is nearing unsustainability, in terms of resources and population. But the flash point and the focus of God’s plan, is the Middle East. God has not, in the past 68 years, allowed Israel to be conquered and He will not allow that to happen now. Although there will be another judgement upon the Jewish people, they will eventually be forgiven and restored. Ezekiel 16:59-63.
Many prophecies tell of God’s fire judgement, this has not happened as yet, His first judgement was by a flood. This coming Lord’s Day of vengeance and wrath, is described as a terrible day of fire and sword. It will be a Day when the heavens blaze 2 Peter 3:7 & 10, burning like a furnace Malachi 4:1, “raining fiery coals” Psalm 11:4-6, fire like a whirlwind, many will be killed Isaiah 66:15-17, suddenly, in an instant....flames of devouring fire Isaiah 29:5-6.

But the verse that tells us exactly what God will use on that Day is Isaiah 30:26a The moon will shine as bright as the sun and the sun will shine with 7 times its normal power.
This accurately describes a solar flare, something that does happen in a small way on a regular basis. In the past there have been larger coronal mass ejections [CME sunspots] but scientists warn of the possibility/probability of a massive CME, that in our modern age of communications, transport and conveniences, would have a devastating effect.

Now, note the second half of Isaiah 30:26b... on that Day, the Lord will bind up the broken limbs of His people and heal their wounds.
This is a wonderful promise to His people, those who love the Lord and follow in His laws, righteous Israel. Many, many prophecies tell how His people will be conveyed and gathered into the Land of Greater Israel after this Day of judgement. This day and the gathering are quite different from that described at the Return of Jesus - years later.

Isaiah 52:6-12 On that Day, My people will know My Name.....go out leave Babylon, keep yourselves pure, the Lord will guard and guide you.

Ezekiel 28:25-26 When I execute judgement on all of Israel’s scornful neighbours, then My people: all the true believers, gathered from the nations, will live in peace in the Land, I shall show My holiness in them for everyone to see. [Before Jesus Returns]

Ezekiel 20:41-42 I shall accept you....after I have brought you out from the peoples where you have been dispersed, into the Land promised to your forefathers. Ref: REB. (verses abridged)

I am not entirely sure If I am understanding what you are trying to say so if something went over my head point me in the right direction lol.

I consider myself to be a futurist also while still believing in the "this generation will not pass" scripture mentioned in Matthew 24:34 The reason why I still believe this is because I don't see that verse pertaining to the generation of the very first event on the list of things that must come to pass as being the "last generation that will not pass" but, instead, the generation that has seen all of these things come to pass including the presence of the AoD. That will be the last generation; The generation that will not pass in my opinion. So if all the events that were mentioned in Matthew 24:4-15 were to be spread out, lets say over a 2,000 year period. I see that generation verse being directed to the generation of humans who are around when the abomination of desolation is standing in the holy place. That will be the only generation capable of seeing everything happen simultaneously. After all Jesus made it clear that "all these things" will take place in "this generation". So I'm not sure how you got to the disbeliever conclusion in your original post.

In all Three of the Gospel accounts of the Olivet Discourse we find two topics.

1. When will the temple be destroyed? Jesus gave numerous signs to look for.

2. When will the Second Coming occur? Jesus gave no definite signs, but only hints and said only the Father knows.

The dividing line is that a period of tribulation would occur before the second event.

Mar 13:1 And as he went out of the temple, one of his disciples saith unto him, Master, see what manner of stones and what buildings are here!

Mar 13:2 And Jesus answering said unto him, Seest thou these great buildings? there shall not be left one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down.

Mar 13:3 And as he sat upon the mount of Olives over against the temple, Peter and James and John and Andrew asked him privately,

Mar 13:4 Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign when all these things shall be fulfilled?
(Mark's account only contains one question, while Matthew's account contains two.)

Mar 13:5 And Jesus answering them began to say, Take heed lest any man deceive you:

Mar 13:6 For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.

Mar 13:7 And when ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars, be ye not troubled: for such things must needs be; but the end shall not be yet.

Mar 13:8 For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be earthquakes in divers places, and there shall be famines and troubles: these are the beginnings of sorrows.

Mar 13:9 But take heed to yourselves: for they shall deliver you up to councils; and in the synagogues ye shall be beaten: and ye shall be brought before rulers and kings for my sake, for a testimony against them.
(In Acts 22:19 we find Paul admitting that he fulfilled this verse.)

Mar 13:10 And the gospel must first be published among all nations.

Mar 13:11 But when they shall lead you, and deliver you up, take no thought beforehand what ye shall speak, neither do ye premeditate: but whatsoever shall be given you in that hour, that speak ye: for it is not ye that speak, but the Holy Ghost.

Mar 13:12 Now the brother shall betray the brother to death, and the father the son; and children shall rise up against their parents, and shall cause them to be put to death.

Mar 13:13 And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake: but he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.

Mar 13:14 But when ye shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing where it ought not, (let him that readeth understand,) then let them that be in Judaea flee to the mountains:
(In Luke's account we find this as the time Jerusalem was surrounded with armies. Cestius Gallus surrounded the city in 66 AD. The early Christians left the city before the final siege of 70 AD.)

Mar 13:15 And let him that is on the housetop not go down into the house, neither enter therein, to take any thing out of his house:

Mar 13:16 And let him that is in the field not turn back again for to take up his garment.

Mar 13:17 But woe to them that are with child, and to them that give suck in those days!
(During the siege of 70 AD mothers ate their own children.)

Mar 13:18 And pray ye that your flight be not in the winter.

Mar 13:19 For in those days shall be affliction, such as was not from the beginning of the creation which God created unto this time, neither shall be.

Mar 13:20 And except that the Lord had shortened those days, no flesh should be saved: but for the elect's sake, whom he hath chosen, he hath shortened the days.

Mar 13:21 And then if any man shall say to you, Lo, here is Christ; or, lo, he is there; believe him not:

Mar 13:22 For false Christs and false prophets shall rise, and shall shew signs and wonders, to seduce, if it were possible, even the elect.

Mar 13:23 But take ye heed: behold, I have foretold you all things.
(This is a key verse which says that Christ had told them all of these signs to look for, before the event occurs. A study of all three Gospel accounts will show that these things did occur, at least to some degree, leading up to the events of 70 AD.)
..............................................................................

Mar 13:24 But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, (This is a time marker which says the next things would occur after a period of tribulation.)

Mar 13:25 And the stars of heaven shall fall, and the powers that are in heaven shall be shaken.
(In Revelation chapter 12 we have angels falling as stars from heaven.)

Mar 13:26 And then shall they see the Son of man coming in the clouds with great power and glory.
(Nobody claimed to see Jesus in 70 AD., as far as I know.)

Mar 13:27 And then shall he send his angels, and shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from the uttermost part of the earth to the uttermost part of heaven.
(In the New Testament the "elect" are Christians.)

Mar 13:28 Now learn a parable of the fig tree; When her branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is near: (This does seem to be the hint of a sign.)

Mar 13:29 So ye in like manner, when ye shall see these things come to pass, know that it is nigh, even at the doors. (This seems to be a sign, but of the previous verse.)

Mar 13:30 Verily I say unto you, that this generation shall not pass, till all these things be done.
(Does this go with the first part about 70 AD or about the second part and the Second Coming?)

Mar 13:31 Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away.

Mar 13:32 But of that day and that hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels which are in heaven, neither the Son, but the Father. (If Jesus did not know the day, the "Blood Moons" do not know either.)

Mar 13:33 Take ye heed, watch and pray: for ye know not when the time is.

Mar 13:34 For the Son of man is as a man taking a far journey, who left his house, and gave authority to his servants, and to every man his work, and commanded the porter to watch.

Mar 13:35 Watch ye therefore: for ye know not when the master of the house cometh, at even, or at midnight, or at the cockcrowing, or in the morning:
(We are to be ready for His Coming at all times and it has been this way since the first century.)

Mar 13:36 Lest coming suddenly he find you sleeping.

Mar 13:37 And what I say unto you I say unto all, Watch.

Yeah I see your point. Well the PO said this - How can we identify which views are not correct, in an effort to get back to what was taught by Christ and His Apostles?

And so I was trying to show that the Apostles all believed that the end was coming and Jesus would return in their generation. So if we want to get back to what they taught then we should all become preterists.

I believe that those who are preaching politics and religion are failing to properly see the doctrine of Christ. The kingdom is about experiencing love and brotherhood on earth, and about waiting for Christ to redeem us from this temporary world full of strife and discord. Just look at these works of flesh seen in Galatians and we will see that any political strife, or religious strife, is pretty much the wrong doctrine, which keeps us from walking in the spirit as we should.

Politics are also a lack of faith in Christ. Christ is all things to us. He is our king and helper. To follow mans politics is to divide our faith in Christ, and is also to walk in the flesh rather than the spirit as well. Faith working by love is what matters, as Paul has said. Politics are both a lack of faith, and a work of strife, discord, dissensions, factions. Those things will enslave us to the world rather than giving us true and complete liberty in Christ. They will cause us to stray from walking in the spirit and seeking the kingdom as we should. The spirit and flesh are contrary to each other. We are free from law but we should not use it for the flesh.

Galatians 5:1 It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery

13 You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh[a]; rather, serve one another humbly in love. 14 For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” 15 If you bite and devour each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other.

19 The acts of the flesh are obvious:.... hatred, discord, dissensions, factions ...

I have some local friends who were not satisfied with their local Lutheran Church.
The wife asked me one day, when I was in their store, if I thought it would be OK for her to eat lunch with the wife of a local man who said he was a Messianic rabbi. My answer was that it would be fine as long as she realized that she did not have to obey the Kosher rules to be a Christian.

Before long this gentile couple had been convinced that they needed to convert to Judaism.

I was invited to attend a worship service at their house on a Saturday afternoon and was told later that if my wife prepared bread for the meal it had to be cooked the day before.

During the service the rabbi talked about circumcising adults and the proper methods of stoning.

My wife and I support a Messianic ministry, "Word of Messiah", that is completely different and their focus is on taking the Gospel to the Jewish people.

I have tried to share the truth with this couple, however they have been convinced that since Jesus was a Jew and kept the Torah then we are supposed to do the same.

Sadly, they have taken the focus off of the Grace of Jesus Christ and have put it on Torah keeping, which they will never be able to do, since only Christ has kept the Law.

In this, they have become modern day Judaisers.
This is not an isolated incident.

There is now a YouTube ministry known as New2Torah, which is run by a former Baptist named Zachary Bauer.

I have spent a number of hours talking with my now Jewish friends, discussing scripture, as well as sharing a variety of resources with them.

Somehow they are able to ignore the passages in Acts and Galatians which clearly show they are following a false doctrine.

"For the testimony of Jesus is the Spirit of Prophecy" (Revelation 19:10).

Only the Son of God, Jesus Christ, resurrected from the dead by the power of God, and having ascended into heaven, could have revealed what was written in the Book of Revelation. The Olivet Discourse (Matt. 24) was given in direct response to the questions of the disciples of Jesus, as to when the Second Coming would occur, (Matt. 24:3). Did Jesus dodge the question ?! That seems to be what some "so called" Bible experts imply when they quote Matthew 24:36.

"But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not even the angels in heaven, but only my Father" (Matthew 24:36, KJV).

Later versions of the Bible (the ISV, NAS and English Standard Version, ect.) add the words to the text, "nor the son" stating explicitly that Jesus himself doesn't know the time of his Second Coming. It appears the culture of disbelief is not just limited to skeptics, but has worked it's way into mainstream Christian theology, so that even the Word of God has been rewritten to accommodate it.

Notice however what Matthew 24:36 "doesn't say". Let's get literal here for a second. It says only the "day and hour" are unknown. It doesn't say anything about the "month or the year" though, does it ?! In order to assume even Jesus didn't know the timing of his Second Coming, and no one else could either, we have to disregard an awful lot of scripture that admonishes the followers of Christ, to look for these signs, "even so that they may be found worthy to ESCAPE all those things that shall come to pass", (Luke 21:36). Which is precisely why the Revelation Prophecy WAS NOT SEALED, and every Christian is supposed to read and understand it, (Revelation 22:10).

"Blessed is he that READETH, and they that HEAR the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: FOR THE TIME IS AT HAND" (Revelation, 1:3, KJV).

Which brings up another point of dissention among the detractors of Christ, "WAS JESUS MISTAKEN WHEN HE SAID THE TIME IS AT HAND" ??? We're his Apostles mistaken when they said the same thing ??? Absolutely NOT ! Once again it is an issue of "timing", because God doesn't reckon time the way we do. Understanding this fact is of such crucial importance to understanding the Word of God, the Apostle Peter stated it as being of "singular" importance among all his other teachings;

"Beloved, be not ignorant of this ONE thing, that with the Lord, one day is as a thousand years" (2 Peter 3:8).

When Jesus and his disciples said, "The time is at hand", they were speaking in this very context. From God's viewpoint, according to the way He reckons time, Jesus was crucified, raised from the dead and ascended into heaven a little more than two days ago, because for Him, a day (24 hours) is as a thousand years of our time.

There are so many (Christians ?!) who are so quick to detract from the testimony of Christ and his Apostles, and in so doing "they believe they are wise, always learning, but never able to come to the thruth", (2 Timothy 3:7, Mark 4:12).

This is the inevitable consequence of blaspheming against the Holy Spirit, which is also the Spirit of Truth, (John 14:16-17) and the Spirit of Prophecy, (John 16:13). So I would admonish you, according to the teachings of the Apostle Paul and our Lord Jesus Christ;

"Despise NOT Prophesying" (1 Thessalonians 5:20).

I would say anyone who is discouraging Christians from studying eschatology and Bible prophecy is definitely spreading false doctrine.

If you want to return to the true teachings of Christ and the Apostles, you should immerse yourself in the Word of Prophecy and believe it is REAL.

"For now we see through a glass DARKLY; but then face to face: now I know in PART, but then shall I know, even as I am known" (I Corinthians 13:12, KJV).

For me, this passage of Scripture says, "none among us can know the whole truth", "unless and until" we fully accept that Jesus Christ was the Son of God and his prophecies are TRUE. Unless one banishes from his consciousness, any and all disbelief, or doubt, such a one will continue to see only "through a glass darkly".

I believe the disciples of Jesus, experienced this "transcendence" of knowledge, when they beheld the resurrected body of Christ. Blessed are those who having not seen, yet Believe, (John 20:9).

Another way to spot "false" doctrine, is to ask yourself the questions.. "Is what I'm hearing consistent with the Gospel of Christ and the whole Scripture" ? "Is the context correct and thorough ?!" "Does it agree with the entire Scripture, or just one part of it" ? You see this kind of error repeatedly constantly in chat forums and preached from the pulpit of churches. People lifting one verse out of the Bible, and using it to create a whole new doctrine that conflicts with actual Gospel of Christ.

The one example that comes to mind, is the teaching of Christian Prosperity. How do you get from, if you would follow me, "go and sell everything that you have and give it to the poor", or "It's easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven" to "Look at me and everything God has blessed me with, so I must be a really good Christian, Huh" ?!

Unfortunately, lots of people do the same thing with Bible Prophecy. They take one passage of Scripture, completely out of context, ignore a mountain of expert scholarly Bible Commentary and traditional Christian doctrine to the contrary, and the next thing you know "WHAMO" it's Christmas morning ! Check out my brand new BMX bicycle ! Ain't it great ! Well guess what friend, when you meet Jesus face to face at the Judgment , it's going to be "Depart from me, you knew me not" ! And take your bicycle with you !

Jesus stated, "A house divided can not stand", (Mark 3:25). When Scripture is divided against Scripture, it can not stand either. Satan is fully aware of this principle. He knows the Bible chapter and verse, word for word, as well as any of you. And believe me, he's an absolute expert at dividing the Word of God against itself. So if you hear a little voice in your head saying, "here's the verse you're looking for" ! Remember to ask those three important questions mentioned at the beginning of this post, because it might not be the voice of God you're listening to.

Mat 24:1 And Jesus went out, and departed from the temple: and his disciples came to him for to shew him the buildings of the temple.

Mat 24:2 And Jesus said unto them, See ye not all these things? verily I say unto you, There shall not be left here one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down.

Mat 24:3 And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?

Comparing one Gospel account to the others will also reveal if a doctine is true or false.

Any doctrine that denies the absolute truth of any part of the word of God is false. As there are a great many prophecies that have unquestionably not yet been fulfilled, then every doctrine that denies they will indeed be fulfilled in the future is false doctrine.

Any doctrine that claims a future way of salvation outside of the New Blood Covenant Church of Jesus Christ is a false doctrine.

New Covenant Revealed:

Foretold in the Old Testament…

Gen 3:15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

Gen 12:3 And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.

Jer 31:31 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah:

Jer 31:32 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the LORD:

……………………………….
Remember that Daniel was reading the Book of Jeremiah at the beginning of Dan. 9.

Dan 9:27 And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.

From the 1599 Geneva Bible

Daniel 9:27

And he (a) shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to (b) cease, (c) and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make [it] desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.

(a) By the preaching of the Gospel he affirmed his promise, first to the Jews, and after to the Gentiles.

(b) Christ accomplished this by his death and resurrection.

(c) Meaning that Jerusalem and the sanctuary would be utterly destroyed because of their rebellion against God, and their idolatry: or as some read, that the plague will be so great, that they will all be astonished at them.

Who Confirmed The Covenant?

Did the angel Gabriel “forget” to mention the New Covenant foretold previously in Jeremiah 31:31-34?

Did the angel Gabriel also not mention a block of time for the ministry of the Messiah?

Mat 26:28 For this is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins. NKJV

Rom 11:27 For this is my covenant unto them, when I shall take away their sins.
(This is the New Covenant foretold in Jeremiah chapter 31. It is not waiting on a future fulfillment.)

Gal 3:16 Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ.

Gal 3:29 And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.

Act 2:22 Ye men of Israel, hear these words; Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God did by him in the midst of you, as ye yourselves also know:
(3,000 Israelites accepted the New Covenant on the day of Pentecost.)

Rom 9:6 Not as though the word of God hath taken none effect. For they are not all Israel, which are of Israel:

Rom 9:8 That is, They which are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God: but the children of the promise are counted for the seed.

Rom 9:26 And it shall come to pass, that in the place where it was said unto them, Ye are not my people; there shall they be called the children of the living God.

Rom 9:27 Esaias also crieth concerning Israel, Though the number of the children of Israel be as the sand of the sea, a remnant shall be saved:

Rom 11:1 I say then, Hath God cast away his people? God forbid. For I also am an Israelite, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin.
(Paul was an Israelite who accepted the New Covenant. In Romans chapter 11, salvation comes through being grafted into the Olive Tree, which is a symbol of the New Blood Covenant Church.)

Heb 8:6 But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises. (It was in effect in the first century.)

Heb 8:7 For if that first covenant had been faultless, then should no place have been sought for the second.

Heb 8:8 For finding fault with them, he saith, Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah:

Heb 8:9 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they continued not in my covenant, and I regarded them not, saith the Lord.

Heb 8:13 In that he saith, A new covenant, he hath made the first old. Now that which decayeth and waxeth old is ready to vanish away.

Heb 12:24 And to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things than that of Abel.

Heb 13:20 Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant,

Rev 12:11 And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.
(A person cannot be under the Blood of the Lamb and not be under the Grace of the New Covenant of Christ.)

Any doctrine that denies the absolute truth of any part of the word of God is false. As there are a great many prophecies that have unquestionably not yet been fulfilled, then every doctrine that denies they will indeed be fulfilled in the future is false doctrine.
As this position you take denies the absolute truth of the Word of God regarding the ordained timing of Soon, shortly, near, at hand, about to take place, in a very little while, this generation shall not pass, the end of the ages have come, etc, etc... you are back to square one.

But I guess you get a special pass and get to deny the absolute truth of these parts of the word of God and still maintain that your doctrine is true?
