Apart from some non-chronological events throughout the bible, there are times that a sense of time moving forward can be recognized.
The time of the gentiles can be recognized by among other things, the fact that the sacrifices stop when Jerusalem is destroyed for the first time, and that once that they are initiated once again in Revelations, things begin to happen here on earth.
The other item, this tim in heaven, is that the scroll is handed down and suddenly things begin to happen.
So, you can see that the temple is destroyed and that as a result, God's focus is on the coming empires until the time when God's intervention will destroy the same gentile empires making the coming kingdom a reality.
