  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

(red bell peppers for $.75 a piece instead of $3.99 a lb).

Wow, 75 cents a pound?!?! I love red bell peppers and practically use it in everything but can only buy it when our budget allows it. I mean one pepper can run you nearly 3 dollars if it is heavy enough!

I like 3girls' outlook as well!

To answer the OP, it definitely is affecting us but only minimally. I long ago decided to live simply voluntarily . It was a decision I chose to incorporate in my parenting as it aligns with a lot of the beliefs I hold about parenting.

It's not just about saving on money for me, it has to do with what 3girls alluded to in her post. The quality of life is more appealing to me. For example, playing board games on family night instead of blowing a ton of money on dinner out, the movies and an arcade place is something that I enjoy.

The way the economy is affecting me right now is that I have for the first time stuck to my budget -- I've always had a budget and generally stuck to it but for the first time, I am extremely disciplined in sticking to the priorities my spouse and I have decided in regards to allocating our income. It's actually been a blessing to me.

I don't know that we're truly in a recession or not. However prices have gotten higher and that has changed the way I shop a bit. I just try to use more coupons and really stick to my list when I go to the grocery store. Our vactions plans will not change, we go to South Padre and stay in a condo every summer and we'll continue to go this year as planned.

You can grow bell peppers maybe? .... its planting season!

When God blesses us with our first home, that is the first thing I plan on doing -- cultivating a vegetable garden. It is reminiscient of my cultural background and I think it is an awesome way to help teach my child about God through His creation as well as to learn the fundamental aspects of gratitude and appreciation. To eat food of your own labor is a wonderful feeling my opinion!

We love to plant a garden. We have one this year but it is very small. It only has a couple of veggies in it. If we had a big yard I know we would have one that is much bigger.

Taylor also did a flower garden and put a sign she made for her lawnservice in it so people could see what nice work she does, lol.

Not yet.
I don't want to say we live frugally because it makes it sound like it's totally out of need when we do a lot of it out of want. Moving toward simple living is a conviction placed upon my heart.

We've agreed that when gas gets to $4/gal. we are going to re-evalutate. I may just suck it up and cycle to the store when my husband is home and haul the groceries up the huge hill to our house. (I'm being so wimpy. I don't want to.)

I just planted our garden so we'll have 16 different types of veggies come late summer and early fall and we'll be able to give away what we don't use to our neighbors and family. I use a variation of the square foot garden method so even though I have less than 1/10 of an acre we grow quite a bit. I'd like to get a dwarf cherry tree and two dwarf apple trees to finish things off so we have more fruit available to us than blackberries.

We don't really vacation. Hopefully we'll be taking a trip to DC for a charity ride for my birthday and a trip to go camping near my in laws but that is it.

Things haven't changed much here other than gas prices. We're just more careful about where we drive and try to walk everywhere. We're blessed to live close to everything :p
We've had a garden/trees since we moved here. We have nectarine, plum, apple, orange and lemon trees. I'm hoping to get a fig tree and/or a banana tree :D
We plant strawberries, bell peppers, tomatoes, cucumber, pumpkin (project for the kiddo's) and corn.
