• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

I was recently diagnosed as having a psychotic illness - possibly schizophrenia. I've read up on this illness but I'm still confused as to how it happened... why I've got it? It's been a pretty confusing time but I'm still trying to pray lean on God to help me and He is, of course He is. It's nice to see that there are so many people on here who will hopefully understand what I'm going through eithe rbecause they are going through it too or because they know somone who is. How do you cope with it???

Do not search for what you are not sure of. You didn't ponder the the diagnosis before they gave it to you. Never go against your better judgement to accept anything. The Bible says the first person that presents his case seems right, until another has given his. If you have intuition, you can see veracity without even analyzing something. The truth will be revealed to you. "Wait on the LORD, and he shall strengthen thine heart." Don't give in to pressure. This will come in great meaures in the future for you.

Hi and Welcome
My name is Gerry, I have Schizo-effective disorder and have been severely ill for more than 10 years now.
Please remember to pray and rely on God as much as you can. He will make you strong in love, patience, kindness, knowledge and endurance. I know it is a hard burden to bear - mental illlness, but I also know that Jesus never leaves nor forsakes us and that He is storing our sweat and tears in vessels of love and compassion.

All the best.

Gerry

were you given some medicine to stop the hallucinations or is it more complicated than that?

you say that you dont know how you got schizophrenea. i read in a book on the illness that you never catch schizophrenea like you catch a cold-you just are schizophrenic.i hope that helps, probably not.

i am sure God will help you. my sister used to suffer from depression. she stayd in bed or watched television for over a year. doctors and psychologists tried helping her and gave her pills, but that just meant that she used to walk around like a zombie.

however when she continued to ask for prayer she overcome the depression. not many like to here that something as simple as prayer is an action, but before jesus could work miracles he spent fourty days praying and fasting. not many like to here that God cures mental illneses, but thats what he did with my sister. that what he will do with you.

rak - yes i am on medication to control voices etc. i'm beginning to realise that schizophrenia is just what it is and you can't catch it - i wish others realised that though - you get some funny looks from people when you say i have a psychotic illness. God is helping me, He has given me the right people i need to help me through this and I am grateful to Him for doing that.

That's great that God is helping you! He will lead you the whole way as well as bring the right people across your path to help you when you need it. Keep on pressing forward it sound like you have a great net-work of people. God will uphold you by His strength and power. We might not know all the answers but our Father in Heaven does!

LCD has lead to numerious schitzophranic increases, especially from those who grew up in the 60's and 70's. If you look at charts you will see there is a dramatic increase in mental-disfigurement among people who have even tried acid.

Hello Whispering Hope,

Schizophrenia, comes from there being too much Dopamine in the brain, it s a brain chemical, and makes up a big part of your brain's chemistry. What shiczophrenic, medications do, is they block the dopamine receptors, so your brain acts like there is less dopamine in the brain then there really is and for most people that stops the voices, the visual hallucinations, and the thought disorder.

However for about one to ten percent of schizophrenics, there is a problem of a particular faulty dopamine receptor, and that needs to be blocked by a drug to keep dopamine from getting to it. If it is not blocked, then they have all the symptoms of schizophrenia. For most people it is not like this though, it is justbecause of the bad chemistry that it takes your thoughts and confuses them really, and the antipsychotics for most people will correct that.

I have actually heard of a person who went a long time with symptoms of schizophrenia, and it wasn't until the doctor, just started guessing at combining antipsychotic drugs together, until the right combination made the symptoms go away. Her illness was completely treatable after the doctor found the right combination. So there is always hope.

I believe an amazing thing. I believe that no matter how crazy you are at the moment, or how bad yor health has gone, and all seems lost, you still can get completely better. It is amazing.

For you religious folks here I will quote something from the catholic bible, in the book of Sirach. "In face of crushing misfortune, trust in the lord."

To me as an atheist, that means to me, that no matter how bad things are, don't give up, and try to fix it.
With medication, this illness is treatable.

However, never go off your medication, because you don't know if you have another recovery in you. We all have another potential for relapse in us, but do we all have another recovery?

I hope your recovery goes smoothly, and you learn a lot about your diaganosis, and yu can stay out of the psychiatric hospital, for long priods of time, eventually. The sooner the better.

A big part of your recovery comes from you, take your meds as prescribed by your psychiatrist,

Thomas

Yeah, it's just a chemical imbalance in the brain. It just happens. Usually it's genetic but sometimes it isn't. A way to cope with it is to research it. Read stories from other people that have had it might help, if they don't scare you. Come up with some questions you might have and just search for the answer on the internet. There's even large sections just about "how to cope with schizophrenia". Therapy is another option to consider.
