Trying to cast out demons who aren't there, is no more harmful IMO than praying for the sick and not seeing them healed. We do these things because we are not perfect yet and don't know everything there is to know about the situation. But how much harm can it be to try, and see if asking, commanding, or rebuking is the solution to our problems?
It is a problem because the focus is wrong. When in prayer, our focus must always be on God, and on seeking his will. If we focus instead on demons, or any aspect of demonology, then we are not looking at God, and our prayers are not reaching him. Any prayer addressing demons is in very great danger of being satanic, and of adding power to evil, rather than the opposite.
All Christian prayer must be addressed to God; Father, Son and Holy Spirit. It is for him to rebuke and cast out, not us.
