Are you sure that is correct? "Banding together" is NOT deciding to use other people's money who have not agreed with your plans for their money.
So basically your objection is that some of the money may go to people you don't approve of. Isn't their being poor and in need enough for you?

The government has been doing that ever since there was a government. Why is this any different?

Do you actually mean to say that the U.S. government has stopped you from giving as much of your own money to whomever you want to give it to?
Please tell us exactly how they stopped you from doing that.

That is EXACTLY what I mean. Are you willing to send me a hundred a week, just because I claim I am poor, and need it? I suspect you are not, even though I might be able to convince someone in Washington of my supposed need. Shouldn't you go along with their assessment?
Right now, Congress is hollering for us to send Billions in aid to the countries urging those illegals to come up here and cross our borders..... even though all of us know that their governments have been stealing the aid we have ALREADY been sending for decades.... never giving their citizens a penny.

By your own posts what I decide to give is not the point at all. You are objecting to supporting programs that you are not in favour of in spite of perhaps the majority of the people voting otherwise. That negates democracy completely.

Quite possibly; I have more confidence in them than you do. But unless you are only giving money to people you personally know, you take that same risk that some of the money you donate to a private charity will go to someone you might not approve of.

What does your Congressman have to say about it? Have you given him your opinion in the matter, discussed the details of the current program?

SS is not a freebee. It was a business deal whereby the government would get to use and invest a portion of every wage earner's pay... in turn agreeing for a tiny portion of the money being slowly paid back to them at a certain age. And the great deal for the government was that they got to keep it all if the payee died early (with the exception of $250 for burial)

Of course it's not free. You pay for it while you work. How much you get back depends on how much you paid in, and how long you live. And it’s not an investment. Nor is it a full-fledged retirement plan. It was never intended to be. It’s just a safety net to provide a minimum income when you are no longer working. Everybody knows that.

Bur still--do you really think that if SS ever came up for a referendum vote, it would be defeated?

Yes, it is a republic and republics can be communist, fascist, democratic and tin pot banana dictatorships. I prefer those republics based on democratic principles. Don't you?

Of course. That is why "The Squad" got Trump so indignant.

Yes, it should be VERY important to any Christian that God gets the credit, especially since He told us He wants it that way.
Yeah, but not just God, but it seems to be more important that the individual Christian get the credit with God than it is that the suffering be alleviated.

Uh, the USA is not a Democracy.
Really? That again? Yes, the USA is a representative Democracy. Look it up. It's both a republic AND a democracy.

One of the big problems that too many people have is the false belief that they have what they have because they worked hard and earned it all for themselves, and so why should anyone else be entitled to any of it? Another big problem is that a number of people are literally incapable of empathy for others even if they've read the bible and gone to church for their entire lives. Being brainwashed by right-wing media to view their neighbors as greedy, lazy, and undeserving also doesn't help matters.

Yet you want direct democratic referendum on social programs rather than a vote in Congress. Odd.

Who exactly are "they"? If you are speaking of liberals then let me say a few words about myself. I have been a Christian for over 75 years and am retired from a career as a scientist, mathematician and educator. I was raised as what I would call a fundamentalist Catholic but I have always had a skeptical mindset and became a searcher. If I had not found liberal/progressive Christianity, I likely would not remain a Christian today. I am what I am today because it is the only way for me to maintain my moral, spiritual and intellectual integrity. I am still not convinced that I am a "true Christian" but I continue to look forward to meeting one.

Oh, you'll meet that one true Christian one day, I promise. :)

Not so odd. Congressional votes are bought and paid for by corporate lobbyists in the form of campaign contributions. Most of us don't have the money to be represented in Congress anymore.

Are we just supposed to hang around and wait for that to happen?
You could start by getting your lazy butt into Med school so you can take care of yourself and your unfortunate loved ones.:preach:

That does not change the inconsistency of denigrating democracy while demanding more direct democracy.
