Since I'm new to the Lutheran Church and want to know all about it, I was wondering what would be a good list of books to get started with. I'm studying through the Small Catechism right now, but I'm also wanting books on Lutheran church history, theology, biblical interpretation, and other good study resources that will help me get up to speed on the church.

A good Lutheran bible commentary set might be on the list as well.

Thanks

What's better than a book list is a source of books. Sounds like a play on words, but it isnt. Simply look up the local church and inquire about their church library. You may not be able to take the books home. After all, some of them are quite expensive. Still, you can read there as well as anywhere else! You know, just for general sound Christian theology, C.S.Lewis can't be beat either. He was in the Church of England (or Episcopalian here in the US) but no one's perfect.;)

I am disappointed in the Concordia self-study bible because they used the inferior and heavily slanted Reformed NIV translation. Thankfully, CPH is working on the new one which will use the ESV instead. The revision work on the SE of Concordia has set the work back a bit, but Rev Paul McCain has told me it will be available sometime in 2008.

The LC-MS may have one foot in, testing the waters, but the WELS has practically jumped in eyes wide open, embracing all sorts of MethoBaptiCostalism and reformed theology.

Please try not to make such blanket statements as to start something right off the bat as a newbie. :)

Guess my hackles are up a bit now. :help:

Here are some more books to add to your reading list. I have read them all - excellent treatment. Some are much denser than others, but variety is the spice of theology...., ah... life.

ELERT, Werner. Eucharist and Church Fellowship in the First Four Centuries. Translated by N. E. Nagel. St. Louis: Concordia Publishing House, 1966.

ELERT, Werner. Last Things. Translated by Martin Bertam, Edited by Rudolph F. Norden. St. Louis: Concordia Publishing House, 1974.

ELERT, Werner. The Structure of Lutheranism. Translated by Walter A. Hansen. Forward By Jaroslav Pelikan, 1962.

HAGGLUND, Bengt. History of Theology. Translated by Gene J. Lund. St. Louis: Concordia Publishing House, 1968.
JI, Won Yong. A History of Lutheranism in Korea:A Personal Account (Concordia Seminary Monograph Series). St. Louis, Missouri: Concordia Seminary, 1988.

MEYER, Carl S. (editor) Moving Frontiers. St. Louis: Concordia Publishing House, 1964.

MEYER, Carl S. Log Cabin to Luther Tower: Concordia Seminary During One Hundred and Twenty-five Years Toward A More Excellent Ministry 1839–1964. St. Louis: Concordia Publishing House, 1965.

SCHWIEBERT, E. G. Luther and His Times (The Reformation from a New Perspective). St. Louis: Concordia Publishing House, 1950. Although old, still a valuable read - and extensive.

SENKBEIL, Harold L. Sanctification: Christ in Action: Evangelical Challenge and Lutheran Response. Milwaukee, Wisconsin: Northwestern Publishing House, 1989.

SPITZ, Lewis W. The Life of Dr. C.F.W. Walther. St. Louis: Concordia Publishing House, 1961.
