When I took a lit class in college, one of the books we read was Dad. The instructor encouraged us to read it through at least once on our own before we got to it in the class. I was the only person in the class who did, and I tell you, a second reading makes a big difference in noticing everything the writer did to construct the story. With a second reading, you really see fore-shadowing and symbolism effects.

I've read quite a few books like that; you read them the first time for plot and excitement, and read them the second time to marvel at the structure and foreshadowing.
The best example of this in movie form is probably The Prestige; I won't spoil it for anyone, but it makes so much more sense the second time.

I used to always re-read books when I was younger. I've read many of my teenage books three to five times each! Even though I knew what would happen, I still loved reading them again. Lately, however, I haven't re-read any books. There are so many books that I haven't read yet that I want to explore!

Um yeah lol if a book is really good I will eventually re-read it. Examples: Memoirs of a Geisha, The Road, etc.

Now, Harry Potter, that is a whole other ballpark. I have read each and every one of those books (save the last one, Deathly Hallows, since it only came out in July) at least 20 times each. They are amazing and even if you've memorized every word (as I have come close to doing, lol) you always walk away with something new each time you crack one open!

I re-read books all the time. It annoys my mother, who thinks that instead of buying books, I should just get them from the library, but she doesn't understand my need to be able to access my favourite books whenever I want, because sometimes I'll wonder about the exact phrasing in a book, and I'll want to look it up.

How many of you read books over and over again. I have read a number of books enough times to make my sister agitated at the fact that I'm reading it again.

Depends on the book....some are just not going to be the same if they have a real secret or twist that gets revealed....

But I do like to read James Herriot again. Love the stories about the Yorkshires and his life as a vet. So, that's one example of something I would re-read.

I love rereading my favorite books. There are some that I just can't get enough of, and others I've read when I was a child and decided to read them over again.

I loved those stories! Those are the books I really got into. Very few books can get me laughing and crying, and those were some of them.
