RCIA Classes

Hey everyone! I am interested in learning more about RCIA classes. What usually goes on? What is the general format? Also, what time of year do they usually start? The town I live in has a very small Catholic Church. I tried to call the Priest yesterday at around 3:00 PM but nobody answered at the church or at the parish hall. I decided I'd try to call Monday because I thought his offices might be closed. Anyway, just some general discussion on RCIA classes would be welcome. What was your experience with these classes if you took them?

I am currently in RCIA and the classes are very informative! It is very indepth and explains as much as it can in the time you are there. When I first started inquiring into the Catholic Church (I was baptized Catholic, but my parents divorced & my mom left) I had someone tell me that they didn't want pew sitters, or people to just give money. They wanted people that wanted a true understanding of the Faith. If your willing to go through RCIA and complete it, then (hopefully) you will never leave. I think there is less "church hopping" in the Catholic Church!

Hi there Holly, Just a bit of info about RCIA.In our parish any person 19 years of age and up are welcomed into this sacramental process of learning about Scripture,Liturgy,the Church tradition.1-2 hours per week over a couple of months preparing for Baptism,Confirmation and Eucharist at Easter.Usually they ask for a sponsor to help you with basic things you may have questions on,or just support.I hope to see your post again. I have had several friends join RCIA,they enjoyed the class study and had fun actually.I know the classrooms can be quite lively with alot of great ways to examine things!

I think it depends on the parish but generally they start in September and continue until the end of lent with Easter Vigil being when the inductees are received into the Church. Much of that is based on the individual progress, though, and religious history. Your best bet is to speak to your priest and get the detail for your specific parish. If you want some good books to read up on in the meantime, tell us what you have questions about, and I'm sure you'll get plenty of recommendations.

As far as format and stuff goes, I have not been involved in religious education ministry, but many others around here have and currently are, so you shouldn't have to wait too long for an answer.

i'm in RCIA also and it started in sept adn goes till easter with from what i understadn, some classes even afterwards to make sure we've covered everything that needs to be.

you'll generally be given a Catechism of teh Catholic Church adn your instructor goes over the pertanent info within about what the Church teaches, dogmas, disciplines and such and how to live as a faithful Catholic

Ah cool information! Thanks to all of you who have contributed. One question though. All the Bibles that I own are Protestant Bibles and at this point in time, I can't afford a Catholic Bible. Will they provide one?

If you ask, I am sure they could provide you with one. You can purchase a paperback NAB Bible for about $10.

The NAB is a more modern translation, easier to read. The DRV is from 1604 I think, and is an excellent translation but can be difficult to read if you're not used to it (like me ).

By the way, do all New American Bibles come with the Deuterocanonical books?

The NAB is what's read at most Masses in the US, so you will be hearing it a lot. It's been revised several times - I'd look for one without the revised psalms, which have way-too-inclusive language.

The NAB is also available on audio cassette - it's a very nice recording, except the psalms.

You can find the Douay-Rheims online (there's a link posted above). I love my Douay-Rheims Bible - not quite as much as my Vulgate, but it's a close second.
