I am going to have to listen to him - when I am in the depths of hell with my depression, which two anti depressants daily still can't seem to conquer, I like to listen to sad music. Thanks for sharing. :tulip:

I'm sorry you've struggled so ferociously with depression. I received your PM, and am not sure if you'll be returning to the site but wanted to share a couple of videos in case you do. I appreciate you sharing videos in both threads I've created in this section (this one and the one about music from the 1920s-1960s).

I've never battled depression, but I've fought my way back to happiness after dealing with grief, serious illness, heartache, and anxiety. This is a really simple song but one that I wrote to make myself feel more hopeful. The microphone fizzled out at the end, so the sound just abruptly dropped, haha:

If you stick around and would like to hear more of my original songs, let me know and I'll share them with you via PM. :)

Here are some YouTube videos that are meaningful to me and might be to you:

More good stuff from way back!

Ben Selvin Orchestra (featuring vocalist Jack Parker): Broadway Melody (1929)

Alvino Rey and His Orchestra: Wild Blue Yonder (1942)

Dave Brubeck Orchestra: Unsquare Dance (1961). Brubeck seemed to be notorious for his compositions with odd beats; this is in 7/4!

Gershon Kingsley: Popcorn (1969)
Wow. The original. I was unaware of this version. I am VERY familiar with the '72 version by Hot Buttered:

I had never heard of either until I started embarking on a search for unique musical pieces. It is from an album entitled Music to Moog By; all of the numbers are played with a Robert Moog synthesizer.

I love Johnny Cash!!!!!! I bought his CD My Mother's Hymn Book for my Nana a few years ago, and she thought it was lovely.

I've grown up listening to him and have also loved Keep on the Sunny Side my whole life. I adored the O Brother Where Aren't Thou? soundtrack when I was tiny and first heard the song thanks to it. I remember singing it in the car on the way to preschool back in 2001, and I think it's originally from the 1800s. It's sweet that is has had such endearment for so long.

It's a Carter Family song from the 30s

This piece from 1923 could have very well paved the way for what we now call rock music. This sounds to me like ragtime heavy on the "boogie-woogie". That's what I detect, anyhow. Just listen, and judge for yourselves. Perhaps you will even enjoy it! :)

This lady's singing has been intriguing me lately. Her name is Yma Sumac, and was known for her five-octave (or thereabouts) vocal range. This song is called Chuncho (Forest Creatures), in which she covers about four-and-a-half octaves, from a deep baritone B2 on up to a whistle-like F#7, the song basically being vocal imitations of creatures of the forest, thus the English subtitle. Simply amazing!

Do you know hard it is to find songs from before 1953? Let alone well before it!

And yet...one of my favs is from the late 20s.
Carver Boys - Tim Brooks (later became known as Mollie and Tenbrooks, with different lyrics, though)
