Anything before my time goes pretty far back. This is a great jazz number from the swing era.
I like that tune. I have heard probably a dozen versions. I think my favorite is Glenn Miller's.

Your vid is by the original band to play it.

I am one who enjoys music of various styles and different eras. Literally! "Moldy oldies" from way back are especially intriguing, and it is truly amazing to me how well they are preserved.

One site, in particular, specializes in Real Audio recordings of music from the early 20th century (roughly 1900 to early to mid-1940s). I have not been to it for quite a while to look for recently-added additions to the "Hit of the Week" section, but was able to download a few of these songs to my computer a few years ago. Here is the site for anyone who may be interested:

http://www.dismuke.org

Digging farther back, I have discovered two sites dedicated to early sound recordings usually on cylinders, from the late 19th and very early 20th centuries (many pre-1920). Like Dismuke, they contain fun downloads and interesting facts about the recordings and the individuals behind them.

http://www.tinfoil.com
http://www.dawnofsound.com

Appreciation for the gems found on these sites are definitely an acquired taste that not many have, I will admit. Obviously, there are some who do (like me, for example)... otherwise, such sites would not exist on the 'Web.

Please do check them out, my music-loving buds! :)

Nick Drake. Born '48 died '74. He had suffered from deep depression and committed suicide. His music is so raw and emotional, I'm very glad I found his music.

His voice is really nice. That's so sad he committed suicide.

Here is one I came across a while ago and it has grown on me. I tend to like 'ballads' meaning songs that tell a story. The story was largely removed from this song and then turned more upbeat by Terry Jacks and he had a hit.

I like the earlier version by The Kingston Trio better even thought the story is sad. This isn't the original, the original is French.

The story becomes crystal clear in the 3rd verse. The missing verse in the Terry Jacks version.

I've been listening to more Nick Drake. I like his music.

I am going to have to listen to him - when I am in the depths of hell with my depression, which two anti depressants daily still can't seem to conquer, I like to listen to sad music. Thanks for sharing. :tulip:

Another tune from WW2. This was said to be the most popular song among both the Allied and German troops. This is the original version. The lyrics, with translation, is below. The German high command wanted to ban it, since it's implied that Lili is a working girl. But it was so popular, they had to let it go.

But leave it to the Germans to turn a love song into a march.

Lili Marlene

1. Vor der Kaserne
Vor dem grossen Tor
Stand eine Laterne
Und steht sie noch davor
So woll'n wir uns da wieder seh'n
Bei der Laterne wollen wir steh'n
Wie einst Lili Marleen.

2. Unsere beide Schatten
Sah'n wie einer aus
Dass wir so lieb uns hatten
Das sah man gleich daraus
Und alle Leute soll'n es seh'n
Wenn wir bei der Laterne steh'n
Wie einst Lili Marleen.

4. Deine Schritte kennt sie,
Deinen zieren Gang
Alle Abend brennt sie,
Doch mich vergass sie lang
Und sollte mir ein Leids gescheh'n
Wer wird bei der Laterne stehen
Mit dir Lili Marleen?

5. Aus dem stillen Raume,
Aus der Erde Grund
Hebt mich wie im Traume
Dein verliebter Mund
Wenn sich die späten Nebel drehn
Werd' ich bei der Laterne steh'n
Wie einst Lili Marleen.

English translation

Right next to the barracks by the main gate
there stood a lantern and stands there up to date
We're going to meet there again
Next to the lantern we will remain
Like then, Lili Marlene
Like then, Lili Marlene

Our casted shadows appearing as one
and the love we had, clear to everyone
and to all people that was quite plain
when by the lantern we were staying
Like then, Lili Marlene
Like then, Lili Marlene

Already says the sentry, lights-out's being called
that can cost you three days, comrad let's not get stalled
We said goodnight right there and then
How I would love be with you again
With you, Lili Marlene
With you, Lili Marlene

It knows your nice walking, as you come along
every night it's burning, but it forgot me long
And if it comes and I'll be slain
Who by the lantern will be coming then
With you, Lili Marlene
With you, Lili Marlene

Off the lands of silence, off the earthly ground
in a dream it lifts me, your kiss leaves me astound
When the mist of night swirls into reign
There by the lantern I will be again
Like then, Lili Marlene
Like then, Lili Marlene
