You cannot selectively choose what is literal and what is symbolic. You need to follow the pattern. Revelations is a symbolic book written for the 7 church. It has nothing to do with non-believers. If you don't understand that then you will be left trying to put together a picture from the pieces of hundreds of different puzzles that will never make any sense. Hence all the silly theories and doctrines that come out of revelations like this topic.
