It can have both sexual and non-sexual meanings. But in all cases, it's rude.
Rude is subjective. I’m not sure why some people in this thread don’t understand that.

No one I know thinks that swear words are inherently rude.

Try saying them to your grandparents or shouting them in a fancy dinner or theater. See if people don't consider it rude.

Nobody is saying profanity is acceptable in every situation--that's a straw man. The fact that someones grandma is uncomfortable with some use of profanity is not evidence that words are inherently wrong. There is nothing wrong with certain words--there are just people with Victorian ideas of language.

How does it simply being a reference to mating itself make it the worst curse word ever?
If I shout out references to sexual acts in mixed company, would you not consider that rude? Ever notice when they want to make it even more vulgar they apply it to someone's mother?

You might want to ask him that. It's not that sex is inherently bad. It's that it gets warped into nothing but an act and not the loving expression of a dedicated couple, and that's what the word being discussed means, the act devoid of love.

Profanity upsets the religious because it it is transgressive in areas of sex and blasphemy. This is why the non religious don't care as much. It has nothing to do with intelligence and everything to do with cultural rules of purity.
Blasphemy is kind of important, whether the irreligious are cognizant of that fact or not.

Actually it has many different meanings. For example, someone saying 'f you' usually doesn't mean that they want to have sex with you, it means that they hate you.
It means anger has mastered him and he is just striking out like a child.

For religious people is feels important; personally, I am not concerned with offending a god, but I would not want to offend a person I am speaking with by insulting a belief they hold. So the line for me would be social, not theological.

This is almost a silly question but what you said reminded me of it. do you think the f word is offensive because it refers to off limits stuff in and of itself (which isnt nice for people to talk about regardless of the other details)?

I am annoyed at the rampant profanity in our culture. People I would otherwise enjoy listening to grate on my moral sensibilities.

Some of them I listen to anyway.

I tell them when you clean up your language, I would love to hear what you have to say and walk away. Often, they will talk with me later, apologize and give me a clean discussion of the topic.

Yes. It is fine. Offense is taken, not given.
You know I fully agree with this. Unless offense is intended. We live in a society of perpetual offense. Even Christians do that. And according to Paul we shouldn't. Take a look at the cancel culture.

This post is really really well said. I would like to add that this is precisely the reasons Christian speech should not include profanity.
